- Inhalt
- Communication is more than the mere exchange of semantic word meaning. The structure of a text, its choice of words or the way it is presented can influence recipients and support or even suppress opinions. In newspaper articles, research papers, an online blog or “just” a conversation with a friend, language can be used as a powerful tool to convince and persuade. In order to investigate these mechanisms, we will have a closer look at general approaches such as conversational implicatures, speech act theory, conversational analysis and models of the linguistic sign. Furthermore, we will use methods from critical discourse analysis to trace power relations and persuasion not only in a political, legal and educational setting but also in everyday conversation.
