  Representing Victorian London

Dozent/in
Maja Jäckle, M.A.

Angaben
Proseminar
2 SWS, Sprache Englisch
Zeit und Ort: Mo 14:15 - 15:45, KH 0.023

Inhalt
This seminar looks at bright and dark sides of Victorian London: London grew tremendously in the nineteenth century; so did the chasm between the haves and the have-nots. While the Great Exhibition - a sign of industrial progress and wealth - was held in nineteenth-century London, poverty, slums and dirt were also common phenomena. We will deal with literary and seemingly non-literary texts as well as with visual material to examine how the city in all its diversity is represented or imagined in discourses of class, gender and race. In doing so, we will approach the texts by means of basic analytical strategies which are prevalent in literary and cultural studies and which can also be applied to other fields of study.

Empfohlene Literatur
Students wishing to participate in this seminar are expected to acquire a copy of A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Books and read Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” before the beginning of the semester. Visual material for the Great Exhibition and Smithfield Market and extracts from Henry Mayhew’s London Labour and the London Poor as well as from Dickens's novels Oliver Twist, Bleak House and Great Expectations will be available via StudOn.
