The World in Literature, Literature as World. Postcolonialism and World Literature

Inhalt
The term world literature may seem intimidating, even pompous, or empty. The seminar aims to explore the use of this term for our understanding of recent trends in the production and reception of literature and introduce students to central questions in the field of postcolonial literature. Increasingly, literature seems to be written for and consumed in a global market place. But “[t]he globe is not the world,” as Pheng Cheah shrewdly observes (“What is a World?” 141). Therefore, we may still wonder what kind of world a particular text constructs and how responses to these worlds may differ locally.Colonialism has violently connected people and places just as it has divided others. We will read and discuss three popular novels: Andrea Levy’s Small Island, Amitav Ghosh’s Glass Palace, and Sebastian Barry’s The Temporary Gentleman. While the novels differ in style, setting, and many other respects, they all share an interest in the history of colonialism and its aftermath. In fact, all three are arguably to some extent historical novels. All three centre around the time of the Second World War, a time that marks the decline of the British Empire. Reading them side by side therefore allows us to consider the momentous changes of this time from different perspectives and study ‘the world in literature’ and ‘literature as world’.
