Dozent/in
Dr. Katharina Gerund

Angaben
Proseminar
2 SWS, ECTS-Studium, ECTS-Credits: 6, Sprache Englisch
Zeit und Ort: Mi 16:15 - 17:45, C 601

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
This seminar is for those students specializing in American Studies and for those in General Studies who need credits in a "kulturwissenschaftliches Proseminar". In American Studies it fulfils the “Politics & Culture Proseminar” requirement (Modul 201; 6 ECTS), in General Studies the "Proseminar Culture" (Zwischenmodul II) requirement (Modul 211; 5 ECTS).

Inhalt
"Melodrama is not just a film or literary genre but a powerful political discourse that galvanizes national sentiment to legitimate state violence." (Elisabeth Anker) In this seminar, we will examine modes and moments of "sentimental political storytelling" (Rebecca Wanzo) by drawing on a broad range of theoretical readings and selected case studies from 19th century literature to contemporary melodrama. Examples to be discussed include Harriet Beecher Stowes Uncle Tom''s Cabin (1852), arguably "America''s sentimental urtext" (Kristin Jacobson), Hollywood films such as The American President (1995), and contemporary TV series like Army Wives (2007-2013) and Homeland (2011-). Additionally, we will focus on political discourses as they enlist melodramatic narratives to address an audience of "sentimental citizens" (George Marcus). Which sentiments are utilized in presidential speeches? How can affects mobilize people to become involved in social movements? How do melodramatic narratives shape current political discourses e.g. on the so-called War on Terror? These are just some of the questions we will explore in the course of this seminar in order to shed light on the specific affective work of cultural and political discourses that rely on sentimentalist traditions and melodramatic conventions.
