- Inhalt
- The Chicano/a Movement of the 1960s engaged in civil rights by fighting racism and stereotyping of Mexican Americans. In this course, we will discuss key texts of the Movimiento, such as poems, speeches, and political agendas. We will also focus on visual and performative arts, such asposters, murals, and "campesino" theater. With particular sensibility to concepts of mestizaje and solidarity, we will address these different forms of expression in the context of the Sixties in general, but also from a transnational perspective on other decolonial struggles around the world. With regard to implications of race and gender, we will analyze cultural Nationalist ideas of an exclusively “bronze nation” in the Southwest and at patriarchical notions of machismo and eventual feminist ideas and responses to a hierarchical structure within El Movimiento and the communities, respectively.
