Inhalt
This course will offer a study of US American literature of the post-bellum period, commonly referred to as American Realism. Roughly covering the timeframe from 1865 to the beginning of WW I, we will be concerned with the stylistic features of some of the leading authors of this period (such as Edith Wharton, Henry James, Theodore Dreiser, and Fanny Fern) as well as the sociocultural background of their writing. More specifically, we will investigate how these authors tried to make sense of a society in flux, when traditional living arrangements and the spatial categorization of life became ‘modernized’ as more and more people called the city their home. Rapid urbanization brought with it a fundamental re-thinking of the structure and meaning not only of the city, but also of domesticity not only in terms of its locality, but also concerning its economic and ideological role. In this class, we will therefore look at short stories and novels from the period of American Realism which try to make sense of and find new ways to represent such social changes. Students will be introduced to theoretical debates about American Realism. Nonfictional primary material will be provided to facilitate additional insight into this crucial period of US American culture. Close-readings of fictional texts finally will allow students to engage critically with leading authors of the time and to gain in-depth knowledge of American Realism and its representational politics and aesthetic strategies.
