- Inhalt
- In this course, we will read Philippa Foot’s book Natural Goodness (2001). Foot argues for a modern version of Aristotelean virtue ethics, according to which the idea of human life sets the standard for the ethical evaluation of action. She thus argues against non-cognitivist accounts in meta-ethics (according to which ethical statements, in some sense, lack objectivity), and for a substantive conception of practical reasoning. Human practical rationality does not consist only in self-interested calculation, but also in following the precepts of virtue. Some topics that will accordingly be treated in this course are (i) cognitivism vs. non-cognitivism in meta-ethics (ii) practical reasoning (iii) happiness and the good life (iv) virtue approaches to normative ethics. If time allows, we will also read related texts by e.g. Foot, Elizabeth Anscombe, and John McDowell.
