Inhalt
Do human beings have free will? This question seems to be one of the most prominent and enduring questions of philosophy. In this course, we will investigate the question from the perspective of contemporary analytic philosophy. The main question in this debate is whether free will is compatible with determinism: are we free if everything we do was already settled at the Big Bang? We will investigate different answers to this question. However, we will also go deeper: what is determinism exactly? Does the modern scientific worldview commit us to the truth of determinism, as many suppose? And is it true that modern science (neuroscience in particular) has disproved the existence of free will? Furthermore, we will ask: what exactly is the importance of free will? Could we live without it, or is it somehow essential to our agency? We will consider these questions by reading a number of recent articles and excerpts from books in the free will debate, which will be provided at the beginning of the course.
