- Analyzing and Understanding Security: An Introduction to International Security Studies (ISS)

- Security has become one of the central issues in the current political discourse. How far may security measures go to protect liberal open societies? How do freedom, security and democracy interact? Which global security risks may arise from domestic or regional conflicts? The seminar aims at introducing and applying theoretical, methodological and conceptual tools for answering this sort of questions. Based on intensive scholarship on ISS-theories, various dimensions of security such as national, societal, human or regime security shall be analyzed. At the same time, we will take a closer look at the instruments of foreign and security action such as armed forces, diplomacy, international law and intelligence. On this basis we then will investigate several issue areas as for instance energy security, environmental security, food security, cyber security and critical infrastructures. For our joint investigation of these matters, scientific texts as well as audiovisual media are applied. The seminar is directed at developing a positive, constructive and active culture of discussion; thus, the will to actively participate in work groups and classroom discussions is expected and highly appreciated. Grading is based on a 30 minutes analytical presentation and a 10-15 pages scientific research paper. This paper shall answer a concrete research question, develop one or more hypotheses, apply suitable methodological approaches and make use of relevant ISS-theories and alike.
While this seminar is offered in English to also accommodate the needs of the international students at the Political Science Institute, ALL students interested are cordially invited to join. There is no need for fear! This is explicitly no English language class, but rather shall be perceived as a chance also for German native speakers to apply and develop their English skills within the field of their scientific expertise along with fellow students from various countries. Since both internationalism and English language skills today are an essential requirement in most professions, participating in this type of seminar setting may help to prepare e.g. for assessment center situations and improve career opportunities.
