- Along with the Arab spring in January 2011 came an avalanche of new books on the political economy of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), where a number of countries have been grouped together and labelled as “Arab countries in transition” (ACT) (for ex., Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Yemen). The aim of this course is to find possible common features and/or differences between the current economic situation of the ACT and the transition in the Eastern and Southern Europe to contribute to discussion regarding the elaboration of a strategy assisting ACT’s economic transition. The topics we opted to focus on in this course are: comparison of levels of economic development in two regions, the role of state in the economy, structural transformation, foreign trade, FDI, competitiveness etc. The participants of the course are assumed to make an oral presentation on one of the broad topics assigned to the group/student and write a seminar paper on specific individual research question (max. 15 pages).
The seminar is offered as part of the Chair for the Economy and Society of the Middle East.
