Inhalt
In response to the sweeping political and social changes occurring in the MENA region, it is vital to comprehend how “Islamists” frame their ideology and attempt to shape individuals, societies, states, and international policies. “Islamists” from the Muslim Brotherhood to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have engaged in a cycle of contentious politics, challenging state and non-state actors, often with the aim of regime change or fundamental political and economic reforms. This course is designed to analyze, interpret and explain how Islamists define their ideology, identity and “rivals”; and how they perceive political, social and religious conflicts that have emerged after the “Arab Uprisings” of 2011.
During our seminar, we will read and analyze short original Arabic texts (approximately 300 words, see example below) published by Islamists. The written texts and discussion will be conducted solely in Arabic but each student’s level of Arabic and individual needs will be taken into consideration and addressed. Our focus will not be on grammar or sentence structure. Instead, we will give special attention to understanding Arabic texts and developing our ability to use them in our study of the MENA region. .
