Inhalt:

The central nervous system is a biological structure with high temporal resolution. For example, when we are controlling a muscle to prevent slipping or catching a falling object, the CNS must generate intelligent behaviour at the millisecond time scale. Therefore, for an accurate prediction of these events we must record from relevant neural structures with high temporal resolution. Electrophysiological recordings and electrical stimulation of the nervous system provide a unique framework to study and control the behaviour of the CNS.

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Students describe the current state of the art methods to implant electrodes in the brain as well as in the spinal cord and muscle. Moreover, as a core work of this seminar, students analyse these signals and understand the rationale behind the utilization of brain/machine interfaces that can record and stimulate concurrently at the millisecond time scale.
With this seminar, students learn the current methods for human/machine interfaces from populations of neurons, interfacing and electrical stimulation of the human nervous system with an emphasis on deep brain stimulation (tremor reduction), pain reduction via afferent stimulation, neurorecovery via electrical stimulation of the spinal cord, and brain-computer interfaces.
A specific focus of this seminar will be the students' interpretation of relevant new literature on brain-machine interfaces from an engineering and neurosurgical perspective, specifically to critically evaluate what are the limits from a neurosurgical and neuroengineering perspective. The students review their findings in a written report that follows good scientific practice.
