Inhalt:

Lecture:
The lectures will cover basic data structures, reading and writing files, program control, and regular expressions. The Perl programming language will be used to introduce skills and concepts to process and interpret biological data. The extensive BioPerl modules will be part of the course.

Computer Lab:
Students will work through examples focused on typical problems in bioinformatics research, in particular, in the field of sequence analysis. Homework programming projects should consolidate the learned concepts and impart some programming practice.

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

The students

• acquire basic abilities to design algorithms to solve specific problems

• become familiar with basic principles of programming

• are able to perform basic software development task and phrase research questions using Perl

• are able to understand more complex programs written by others
