Image Formation Chain Optimization in Multimodal Emission Tomography

Molecular Medicine diagnoses diseases at the cellular and molecular level. Radioactive tracers used in the Molecular Imaging are able to localize and visualize molecular processes in vivo that describe pathological activities in the body. Volumetric imaging poses high demands on hardware as well as on the algorithms. These have to precisely model the medical modality with its physical processes to obtain the best image quality. New systems and the need for high resolution data raise the demands on the computational power and on innovative reconstruction methods. This problem is addressed with the current research in the field of GPU hardware that brings an incomparable computational power at a reasonable price. The main aim of the research project is to study the benefits of GPU processors in the multimodal emission tomography image formation chain. The results and methods are intended for clinical applications that would improve the diagnostic processes as well as patient care.
