- This seminar looks at how the use of letters has changed in the history of English literature. Beginning with late 17th-century writing and Aphra Behn, epistolary fiction became popular in the 18th century with Samuel Richardson's works, and the letter also features strongly in modernist and contemporary writing, now often as email and social network post. In this seminar, we will look at how questions of mediality, reliability, intimacy, and factuality affect the function that letters play in narrative prose fiction across the centuries.
