- We look at three plays by Shakespeare in the light of our two key terms: form and action. We start with a discussion of Aristotle's concept of praxis ('action') in his Poetics, using it as the starting-point for a more or less structural theory of dramatic action. When we look at the three plays, we will add a formalist emphasis to this this theory, from a more or less dramaturgical position. By the end of the course, we will have analysed our three plays in terms of the variety of the forms of dramatic action they display, including the general notion of 'plot', of course, but also considering actorial roles and the vexed question of agency.
