- In this proseminar, we will investigate the meanings, histories and cultural impacts of borders and borderlands in the United States, with a particular focus on its Southern border with Mexico. Through the study of both theoretical texts and cultural products (i.e literature, film and TV series, performance and visual arts, etc), we will examine how borders/borderlands are understood, imagined, and exploited in US American culture. This seminar links the work of scholars, artists and activists to take fully into account the ways in which borders, and their spaces, affect identities, and more broadly societies. Key themes will include cultural performativity, race, ethnicity, gender, class, nationalism and transnationalism, immigration, citizenship, human rights, among others.
