- Inhalt
- In this seminar we will study various aspects of mobility in British literature and culture. We will distinguish forms of tourism,
travelling, and migration. What functions does tourism have? How are women represented within travel literature and culture?
What functions do the 'other', the countries, food and bodies have? How are (diasporic) identities constructed by migration?
Our material will range from literary (texts by early travellers of the British Empire as well as by twentieth century 'Black British writers')
to visual examples (such as e.g. advertisements). We will study mobility in British culture from the nineteenth until the twenty first
century by studying questions of identity within urban culture, the diaspora and (post)modern travel writings.
Our reading will include excerpts from Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) as well as the novels The Final Passage (1985) by Caryl Philipps and Bernardine Evaristo's Lara (2009).
Due to the pandemic this course will take place online. Please prepare the reading in advance.
