- Inhalt
- In recent years, social and cultural constructions of masculinity have become an important focus of gender studies and cultural studies alike. Talk about, for example, a (white) male ‘crisis’ or “the end of men” (H. Rosin) abounds, suggesting that rigid and all-too stereotypical constructions of masculinity are in dire need of an update. At the same time, this questioning of rather traditional understandings of masculinity is met by a “backlash” (S. Faludi) with blatant displays of ‘toxic’ masculinity taking center stage in contemporary US-American culture. Scrutinizing a broad range of examples – from music to literature, film, and television to advertisements and ‘social’ media – we will discuss contemporary representations of masculinity in US-American culture and examine how masculine identities intersect with and are shaped by other categories, such as age, class, race, sexuality, or health.
