Inhalt:
The advanced thematic seminar addresses key questions of American literary studies through exemplary cases.
Potential fields covered are:
Literary discourse viewed through the lens of theoretical approaches
Cultural evaluation and reception of literary texts, processes of canonization
History of genre (forms and functions)
Literary and cultural memory
Ethics and aesthetics
Medial aspects of literary and cultural studies; changes in mediality, intermediality, the cultural impact of electronic media and digitalization
Transculturation, creolization, hybridity in North American literatures
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
Students acquire currency in a second thematic field within American literary studies and with relevance to contemporary research; they practice their ability to work critically and independently in compliance with academic standards, which they test by writing a short scholarly presentation and a final seminar paper. The Independent Study prepares students for their work towards a master’s thesis and trains them in academic methodology and argumentation.
