Gamma Ray Telescope in the Class Room
(Hauptseminar, 5 SWS, Stefan Funk, Di, 10:30 - 12:00, Livestream auf FAU-Videoportal; Di, 14:30 - 16:45, Zoom-Meeting; a) Lectures: 6 lectures Tuesdays 10:30-12:00 on 19.10., 26.10., 9.11, 16.11., 23.11. and 30.11. b)Observing nights: 3 times (exact dates will be announced in class), c) Analysis sessions: weekly starting on 19.10. on Tuesdays from 14:30 to 16.45.)
Empfohlene Voraussetzungen:
Experience with running software from command line (on linux).
Inhalt:
At first the students will get an introduction to ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and will then use this knowledge for analysing real data sets by themselves. Modern analysis software will be used for this purpose. To sum up their results the students will write a homework assignment of about 5 pages. It is supposed to resemble a publication in a major scientific journal.
Overview of particles in cosmic rays
Introduction to ground-based gamma-ray astronomy with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs)
Observation of gamma-ray sources
Understanding the steps from raw data to calibrated data
Analysis of data with modern software packages
Evaluate data quality
Interpretation of results
Writing a scientific publication
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
Students
acquire hands-on experience in applying modern analysis methods to real gamma-ray data sets
explain the relevant topics of the lecture
write a homework assignment in the style of a scientific publication
