Bilingual Education and Content and Language Integrated Learning -
- Dozent/in:
- Thorsten Piske
- Angaben:
- PS (MS, PO 2020), 2 SWS, für FAU Scientia Gaststudierende zugelassen
- Termine:
- Di, 14:15 - 15:45, KH 0.023
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- This course is part of the "Basismodul Englischdidaktik", "Prüfungsnummern": 71122 (PO 2020) and 71112 (PO 2012).
Course requirements: Regular attendance, active participation in class, academic presentation and short seminar paper
- Inhalt:
- For the last 30 years, many European politicians and educationalists have emphasized again and again that due to globalization and ongoing political developments in Europe it is necessary to increase the efficiency of foreign language teaching. A bilingual approach called “immersion education” is described by Wesche (2002, p. 362) as "the most effective means of school second language instruction yet developed for majority language children." The most important characteristic of bilingual approaches such as immersion education or content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is that a foreign language – not the students' first language – is used to teach at least parts of the school curriculum. Detailed research carried out in countries such as Canada, the United States, Finland, Spain, Switzerland, Wales, and Germany has shown that students enrolled in bilingual programs are usually highly successful in acquiring very good foreign language skills without showing any long-term deficits in the development of their first language or in learning subject matter. In Bavaria, bilingual programs are offered at an increasing number of elementary schools, secondary modern schools and grammar schools. In this course, we will first discuss different types and goals of bilingual education. Then we will consider instructional strategies commonly followed in bilingual classrooms and also design bilingual lessons. Finally, we will explore the results of research examining the effectiveness of bilingual programs (implemented in pre-schools/kindergartens, elementary schools, and secondary schools).

Differentiation and the individual learner -
- Dozent/in:
- Christian Hagen
- Angaben:
- PS (MS, PO 2020), für FAU Scientia Gaststudierende zugelassen
- Termine:
- Di, 16:15 - 17:45, KH 2.014
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- This course is part of the "Basismodul Englischdidaktik", "Prüfungsnummern": 71122 (PO 2020) and 71112 (PO 2012). Course requirements: Regular attendance, active participation in class, academic presentation and short seminar paper
- Inhalt:
- There is no such thing as an "average learner". Even a seemingly homogeneous class is characterized by individual features of the learners and their differences in proficiency level, motivation, learning style, social background, first language and many others. Good teaching should try to perceive and consciously take into account these different learning conditions.
In this seminar we will discuss, among other things,
which prerequisites of the learners we need to be aware of
which methods are available to identify the status quo in order to enable a concrete, systematic and targeted adaptation of the learning content to the needs of the learners
which learning arrangements can be used to enable individual progress for as many learners as possible.
#Differentiation, #Individualisation. #Learner Autonomy #Motivation #Learning Strategies

- Dozenten
- Angaben:
- Grundseminar, 2 SWS, Frühstudium
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- The Grundseminar Linguistics I belongs to the following modules in the indicated degree programs:
BA English and American Studies : Basismodul Linguistics. (No requirements.)
Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien: Basismodul Linguistics. (No requirements.)
Lehramt Englisch an Grund-, Mittel- und Realschulen: Elementarmodul L-UF Linguistics. (No requirements.)
- Inhalt:
- Linguistics is the scientific study of language. The Grundseminar Linguistics I, in combination with the Aufbauseminar and the Basisvorlesung (except for students of L-UF), is intended to give an overview of essential aspects of the field, of approaches and research methods. This includes questions like the following:
How can the structure of language be described? For example: How are different sounds formed and what function do sounds have in the act of communication? How are words and how are sentences structured?
How do people use language? How does the language of different people vary and why do people vary in their use of language? Why and how does language change?
Is linguistics supposed to describe or prescribe linguistic usage? Is there correct and incorrect English in native speakers? Who decides what correct English is?
How can insights gained in this way be used for the teaching and learning of English? Are some English grammars and dictionaries better than others, and what are the criteria?
The prerequisite for a successful participation in the Grundseminar English Linguistics is a sound knowledge of English. The course itself will be held in English and concludes with a written end-of-semester test.

to introduce areas of linguistics which have not found a place in the Grundseminar (e.g. lexicography or variational linguistics)
NB In the degree programs BA and L-Gym, the Aufbauseminar and the Basisvorlesung are examined in a joint written end-of-semester test. Therefore, these courses must be attended in the same semester.
