- Dozent/in:
- Christine Wallis
- Angaben:
- Übungsseminar, 2 SWS, für FAU Scientia Gaststudierende zugelassen
- Termine:
- Do, 12:15 - 13:45, KH 1.012
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- This class is part of the following module:
Prerequisite: sprachhistorisches Seminar (in Zwischenmodul L-Gym Linguistics; ideally Old or Middle English) Course requirements: Submit at least 3 homeworks during the course or a longer translation after the course.
- Inhalt:
- The reading course is aimed at students who want to improve their knowledge of Old and Middle English and/or who are interested in
or preparing for the Old or Middle English assignment in the Staatsexamen Englische Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt Gymnasien).
In this course we will read larger parts of the Old and Middle English canon texts relevant for the state examination, translate into German
and discuss the linguistic-historical peculiarities that occur in them. This will give you more familiarity with previous language levels
and practice in translation and can deepen your knowledge in basic linguistic-historical topics. The focus of the
text selection this semester is based on literary links between Medieval England and the wider world, so we will also focus on genre-typical
and cultural-historical characteristics. The course is very labour-intensive due to the longer texts that have to be prepared for each session. The course takes place every Thursday 12:15 - 13:45, with Old and Middle English groups meeting in alternate weeks.

Introduction to Middle English The Language of Chaucer: Sex and Practical Jokes in the Miller’s Tale [AE_HIMidEn] -
- Dozent/in:
- Julian Mader
- Angaben:
- Sprachhistorisches Seminar, 2 SWS, für FAU Scientia Gaststudierende zugelassen
- Termine:
- Mo, 10:15 - 11:45, C 301
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- The Sprachhistorisches Seminar belongs to the following modules in the indicated degree programs:
– BA English and American Studies: Hauptmodul B (Requirements: completed Zwischenmodul II)
The course will conclude with a written test.
- Inhalt:
- In this introductory course, we will explore the variety of Middle English employed by the 14th-century poet Geoffrey Chaucer.
You will become familiar with the most important phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic features of Chaucer’s language as well as their origin and further development. This will provide you with a better understanding of (ir)regularities and characteristics of Present-day English, for example the discrepancy between spelling and writing (e.g. <ee> for /i:/ as in see /si:/), irregular forms such as plural mice instead of *mouses, and why we address everyone with you irrespective of number or politeness (cf. French tu and vous).
The class also involves intensive reading and translation into German of "The Miller’s Tale" from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a fabliau packed with witty exchanges, sex, and practical jokes, and "in many ways the most perfectly accomplished of the Canterbury Tales" (Pearsall 2003: 165).

- Please acquire: Sauer, Walter. 1998. Die Aussprache des Chaucer-Englischen: Ein Übungsbuch auf der Grundlage des Prologs der Canterbury Tales. Heidelberg: Winter.
