Die Englische Satire

Rudolf Freiburg
Angaben:
Vorlesung, 2 SWS
Termine:
Do, 10:15 - 11:45, KH 1.016
Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Optionsmodul L-GYM Literature (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul L-GYM Literature) – mündl. 15-20 Min. BA English and American Studies: Hauptmodul B (302) Literary Studies (Zulassungsvoraussetzung: bestandenes Zwischenmodul II) – mündl. 15-20 Min.
Inhalt:

Inhalt:
In this seminar, we will study the history of the English Short Story from its origins in the 17th and18th centuries to the postmodern variations of the form in contemporary literature. We will analyse the generic features of the 'anecdote', the 'essay' and the 'oriental tale', and then focus on the 'novelette' and its aesthetic theory. After discussing Edgar Allan Poe's endeavours to distinguish short stories from the novel we will read and interpret selected examples of the genre taken from the vast repertoire of modernist literature. We will examine James Joyce's notion of 'epiphany', Virginia Woolf's concept of 'the moment of vision' and Katherine Mansfield's idea of 'the glimpse'. The seminar will end with an analysis of the short story in postmodern contexts, where its form is disrupted by experimental techniques such as 'foregrounding', 'intertextuality', 'self-reflexivity' and 'meta-textuality'.

Inhalt:
Jonathan Swift is one of the most important satirists of the eighteenth century. In this seminar, we will concentrate on his satires written in both prose and verse. After analysing the political satire in Book I and II, the attacks on science in Book III and the concept of Swift's "new anthropology" in Book IV of Gulliver's Travels (1726), we will focus on the complex satirical innuendos of The Battle of the Books (1704), A Tale of a Tub (1704), An Argument against Abolishing Christianity in England (1708) and A Modest Proposal (1729). Basing our discussions on traditional and contemporary positions of theory we will finally study Swift’s most significant verse satires such as "The Lady's Dressing Room" (1732), "The Beasts' Confession to the Priest" (1732), "A Beautiful Young Nymph Going to Bed" (1734) und "Strephon and Chloe" (1734).

This seminar draws on research from disability studies and the growing interest in corporeality and embodiment to look at a range of fictional works that address the normativity of bodily and mental states. Starting with a few visual examples from films such as Freaks (1932) and My Left Foot (1989), and pausing briefly for Pope and Kafka, we will focus on novels by Virginia Woolf, Mark Haddon, and David Mitchell to discuss how the performativity of normative bodies is challenged through aesthetic strategies of representation. The seminar will also trace parallels to postcolonial studies, queer studies, and other ethical discourses.

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): HauptmodulL-GYM Literature, mündl. Präsentation mit Thesenpapier (20 %)(Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul L-GYM Literature)
Inhalt:
