We will read and interpret texts from the literary work of Julian Barnes, Kazuo Ishiguro, Jeanette Winterson, Nick Hornby, and Graham Swift.

- This seminar looks at how the use of letters has changed in the history of English literature. Beginning with late 17th-century writing and Aphra Behn, epistolary fiction became popular in the 18th century with Samuel Richardson's works, and the letter also features strongly in modernist and contemporary writing, now often as email and social network post. In this seminar, we will look at how questions of mediality, reliability, intimacy, and factuality affect the function that letters play in narrative prose fiction across the centuries.

PS Excess, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll: Modern & Contemporary Poetry [AE_PSMnCP] -
- Dozent/in:
- Melissa Sarikaya
- Angaben:
- Proseminar, 2 SWS
- Termine:
- Mi, 10:15 - 11:45, KH 1.014
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- as Proseminar gehört in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
Lehramt Englisch an Grund-, Haupt- und Realschulen (neu): Seminarmodul L-UF Literature
Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Zwischenmodul L-GYM Literature
BA English and American Studies (neu): Zwischenmodul II Literature
Scheinerwerb: Hausarbeit
- Inhalt:
- Modernity marks a period of nationwide technological, social and cultural changes. It is not surprising that those changes are also palpable in the literature production as well as reception. Torn apart between sticking to traditional notions and revolutionising as well as integrating avant-gardes, modern and contemporary poetry offers a great variety of poetic tendencies. This seminar compares those tendencies and studies poetic positions since the 1890s.
Excess: We will have a look at 'scandalous' poetry that touches upon taboos such as the direct display of sexuality and was therefore received as shocking, particularly for a prudish Victorian audience.
Drugs: 'love is a drug' is a common phrase. In this respect, we will analyse in how far that is true for modern and contemporary love poetry. We will take gender roles into consideration as well as a diversity of poets. Love poetry cannot always be solely reduced to an affectionate display of emotions addressing a man or a woman or in fact a human at all.
Rock 'n' Roll: Poetry is directly connected with musicality. Song lyrics are the best example for that. However, not only music portrays the melodious focus, but also poetry slams play on rhythmical concepts. We will have a look at contemporary pop-culture and examine how poetry interferes with our lives every day in forms of slogans, films, music and slams.

PS Forms of Action in Three Plays by Shakespeare [AE_PSShak] -
- Dozent/in:
- Mike Pincombe
- Angaben:
- Proseminar, 2 SWS
- Termine:
- Mi, 10:15 - 11:45, KH 2.012
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- Das Proseminar gehört in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
Lehramt Englisch an Grund-, Haupt- und Realschulen (neu): Seminarmodul L-UF Literature
Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien (neu): Zwischenmodul L-GYM Literature
BA English and American Studies (neu): Zwischenmodul II Literature
Scheinerwerb: Hausarbeit
- Inhalt:
- We look at three plays by Shakespeare in the light of our two key terms: form and action. We start with a discussion of Aristotle's concept of praxis ('action') in his Poetics, using it as the starting-point for a more or less structural theory of dramatic action. When we look at the three plays, we will add a formalist emphasis to this this theory, from a more or less dramaturgical position. By the end of the course, we will have analysed our three plays in terms of the variety of the forms of dramatic action they display, including the general notion of 'plot', of course, but also considering actorial roles and the vexed question of agency.
- Empfohlene Literatur:
- William Shakespeare, Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, The Tempest

MA Literaturstudien – intermedial und interkulturell: Modul 8
- Inhalt:
- For quite a long time Ian McEwan has been regarded as the enfant terrible of contemporary English literature. As a young writer he shocked his audience by breaking taboos and by writing about sexuality and violence, meanwhile he belongs to the small circle of the most prestigious British writers. This lecture intends to study the many facets of McEwan's literary work. After analysing some of his early short stories we will concentrate on some of his most important novels: The Cement Garden (1978), The Comfort of Strangers (1981), The Child in Time (1987), Black Dogs (1992), Enduring Love (1997), Amsterdam (1998), Atonement (2001), Saturday (2005), Solar (2010), The Children Act (2014) and Nutshell (2016). We will discuss McEwan's treatment of history, politics, religion and science. Our main focus will lie on the analysis of ethical problems in McEwan's novels.
