Wearable sensor technology is used in various situations, including sport, medicine and rehabilitation. However, how would a patient, e.g. with a hemiparesis after stroke mount a sensor? Where is the optimal place for a sensor? In the Iron Man Suit seminars, we model, design, and build prototypes of body-worn systems, including support infrastructure, e.g. robotic technology for self-attaching sensors to hardly reachable body parts. The systems include sensors, actuators, electronics, and a variety of software components, including embedded artificial intelligence. For example, we develop electronics and software for a “Jarvis”- inspired human-computer-interaction approach. We use 3D printing and other additive manufacturing techniques to combine mechanics, electronics, and algorithms. A key aspect of this seminar is the usability evaluation, e.g. performing study with healthy volunteers and patients.
Learning objectives:
  • Learn design and engineering principles, including 3D printing, mechanical engineering, electronics, sensors, and actuators, as well as online software implementation.

  • Understand and apply methods for requirements engineering, agile development, and verification and validation.

  • Create body-worn sensor technology and evaluate its performance.

  • Practice teamwork, scientific presentation and reporting.

This term's project topic will include: (https://www.cdh.med.fau.de/2022/03/31/master-thesis-simulation-and-analysis-of-smart-garment-sensing-performance/)

  • Simulation and Analysis of Smart Garment Sensing Performance

The seminar will be introduced during the first meeting/Vorbesprechung on April 26, 4 pm. The link to the first meeting will be announced soon.

Literature
Up-to-date literature recommendations will be provided during the seminars.
