Constitutive meeting on 2 November 2016 at 2pm in the common room ("Teeküche") of Theorie III for an introduction to the philosophy underpinning the seminar and in order to fix dates and times commonly suitable for a maximal subset of participants.

Contents
This seminar for master students and advanced bachelor students discusses the Hamiltonian formulation of Einstein’s equations as well as the resulting theoretical and applicational insights.
The Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity is virtually never treated in introductory lecture series on the topic, although both the physical understanding of general relativity as the dynamics of geometry and a significant part of modern applications (as for instance merging black holes, whose quantitative understanding played a central part in the recent identification of the source that emitted the first gravitational wave signal that was famously detected less than a year ago) heavily build on it. Also the canonical quantization of gravity, one of the deep outstanding questions of theoretical physics, must start from the Hamiltonian picture.
In summary, this seminar treats a very topical and at the same time foundational subject that is highly relevant for all students interested in theoretical foundations and virtually any application of gravity (such as in cosmology and astrophysics), complements the existing courses in this field quite seamlessly and, quite importantly, can be explored by students on the basis of selected articles and textbooks.
Besides the classical series of seminar talks by the participants — which all too often leaves the group as a whole unaware of the bigger picture, even if all individual contributions are very good — this seminar attempts to remedy this situation by the course instructor providing, in addition, an orienting opening lecture, a concluding final lecture (and possibly intermediate lectures, whenever the need arises).
