Introduction to Research

Credits: 5

Contents
This course consists of a systematic introduction to the techniques that proved particularly successful in the conception of research ideas in theoretical physics, the execution of projects pursuing these ideas and finally the presentation of the obtained result in various formats to other scientists. In particular, we will develop together — in a rather interactive way and in the form of various case studies that the students dream up themselves — solutions to strategic and practical questions as they later on regularly appear in Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD theses. In a series of talks at the end of term, the participants will then justify their approaches taken in the case studies, explain their reasons for various decisions during the project, discuss success or failure and finally present their results in a research talk.
This course format is very demanding for both the lecturer and the participants, as we aim at approaching a very difficult question (namely how to generate research ideas and how to gauge their potential) in a heuristic way. This is difficult for the simple reason that there is no generally valid system of how to do that. But that does not prevent us from doing the very best we can do towards that end by exploring this complex issue in this seminar.
In particular, the main task set for students in this seminar is to develop own research ideas (which often only from a student perspective appear as unsolved questions, but exactly for that reason serve excellently as case studies, by virtue of a trick I will explain). This is indeed quite demanding, but will be rewarded towards the end through the experience gained and the progress made. If we have a good run, this course will provide a nice initial toolbox to be developed further and thus to be made into one’s very own research style when writing one’s Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis, and possibly beyond.
