- Inhalt
- Pragmatics studies how speakers and writers use language as a means of communication in specific social and cultural contexts - "how to do things with words" in the famous terms of Austin 1962. In this seminar, we will explore how English speakers "have done things with words" in the past 1000 years. We will investigate topics such as the realization of speech acts (e.g. requests, insults), the marking of (im)politeness in different periods of English by address pronouns (thou vs. you) or honorifics (e.g. Sir, Madam), or the development of individual pragmatic units such as interjections (e.g. Jesus!), politeness markers (e.g. please) or discourse markers (e.g. well, I mean, you know). Macro-topics include explorations into the language of Shakespearean drama and other issues of genre and text type, such as the development of medical, scientific, or news discourse.
The workload for this class comprises reading tasks on a weekly basis and assignments, as well as a term paper to be handed in towards the end of the term break.
Please get yourself a copy of Jucker & Taavitsainen's 2013 English Historical Pragmatics, which we will use as our basic textbook. You may attend the class without being familiar with Old and Middle English (though some experience with these stages of English is definitely helpful for some of the topics), but be prepared to work with Early Modern texts. The accompanying Lektürekurs "Communicative Patterns from the Past" (Monday 12:15-13:00), mandatory for the MA students but also open to the other participants, will make you more familiar with earlier stages of English by means of close reading and translation of relevant texts.Due to the Corona situation, the seminar will take place online, using Zoom and StudOn. Further information will follow in due course on StudOn. This class is also recommended for students preparing for the diachronic part (Altenglisch or Mittelenglisch) of the Staatsexamen Englische Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt Gymasium).
