- Inhalt
- The second half of the 18th Century is characterized by a significant shift in paradigms: whereas the Augustan Age showed a certain predilection for logic and rationality, writers after 1750 refuted the ‘tyranny of reason’ and focused on the psychological and emotional aspects of life and reality. The new age of sentimentality is ushered in by a series of innovative works such as Oliver Goldsmith’s The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (1768), William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience (1789) and William Beckford’s Vathek (1786). The seminar will concentrate on the new vein of writing in poems, novels and dramas of the period; we will discuss the selected text against the backdrop of the essential aesthetic and philosophical concepts of the time.
