- Inhalt
- The discussion of 'black Britishness' and 'black British writing' has accumulated a long backstory in British postcolonial discourse and British literary history ever since the mid-20th century. In this course, we will explore a broad range of writers usually coined 'black British': Nigerian Chinua Achebe; Trinidad-born Sam Selvon; Nigerian Ben Okri; Kittian-British Caryl Phillips; and Nigerian-born Helen Oyeyemi. We will discuss four novels and a short-story collection that cover a wide geographical as well as thematic scope, moving from Nigeria to Lagos and London, and from the West Indies to Dover, and touch upon colonial, post-colonial and neo-colonial issues as well as questions of genre and story-telling in the process (the post-colonial short story, the London novel, post-modernism and post-colonial gothic).
Please note that attending this course entails a comparatively heavy reading load - students are therefore expected to start reading during the semester break. You should have finished reading at least Things Fall Apart and Moses Ascending by the beginning of term.
