- Das Seminar gehört in folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
- Inhalt
- This is a course for people who have always shied away from poetry because they think it is too easy to ‘get it wrong’. Fear not! We will not be concerned with those ‘deeper meanings’ that you were never able to find in the poems you were made to read at school. We are interested in how Tudor poets put their poems together out of words and ideas. The poets we will be looking at are not particularly wonderful. They are just people who happened to write a poem. (People did that kind of thing back then.) Most of them did not even bother to sign what they had written, so we will be reading lots of anonymous work. The poems are not brilliant either — some are even rather awful. And practically nothing has been written on them. But that just makes it easier for you to analyse them without worrying that you are saying the wrong thing. In fact, in many cases, you will be the first person actually to write about this sonnet or that epitaph. Yowza!
The actual structure of the course will depend on how many of you there are. But there will be a dual emphasis whether there are 5 or 15: (1) I will explain the basics of a number of topics, such as metre and syntax; (2) We will all analyse poems in situ, perhaps just one or two a week at the start, then more as we go along and become more expert.
