This seminar is for those students specializing in American Studies and for those in General Studies who need credits in a "kulturwissenschaftliches Proseminar".
In American Studies it fulfils the "Politics & Culture Proseminar/Mittelseminar" requirement (Modul 201; 6 ECTS), in General Studies the "Proseminar/Mittelseminar Culture" (Zwischenmodul II) requirement (Modul 211; 5 ECTS).

Inhalt
Ecocriticism emerged as a movement within (mostly Anglophone) literary studies in the 1990s aiming “to bring a transformation of literary studies by linking literary criticism and theory with the ecological issues at large” (Oppermann 1999). Since then it has developed into a research field in its own right and has spread into disciplines other than American literary studies. In this seminar we will read theoretical key texts in the field from its inception in the late 20th century to the present moment to retrace its development and scrutinize its main tenets. We will familiarize ourselves with theories of ecofeminism, environmental justice ecocriticism, and posthumanism and critically engage with concepts such as nature, wilderness, human exceptionalism, and the Anthropocene. Analyzing literary fiction, art, and film we will trace representations and changing conceptions of ‘nature’ and human-non-human relationships from the 19th century to the present.
