- Inhalt
- The notion of causation is familiar from everyday life. We are used to identifying events or things as being related by cause and effect, and this plays an important role in our understanding of the world around us. But what is it that we are looking for when we are looking for the cause of something? More precisely, what is the nature of this relation, and what are the relata? A turning point in the philosophy of causation is Hume's criticism of the idea that there is a necessary connection between a cause and its effects and his claim that causation is simply a matter of constant conjunction, or regularity of succession.
In this seminar, we shall follow four main research directions. Going back to Hume, we shall enquire again into the nature of this relation, causation, by examining the leading theories in contemporary metaphysics. We shall then examine the question of the nature of the relata: Events? Facts? Agents? Depending on one's answer to this question, is causation to be distinguished from causal explanation? Finally, we shall investigate the connection between metaphysical theories of causation and theories of moral responsibility.
