- Inhalt
- Democratic backsliding – the gradual decline in the quality of democracy – has been characterised as the key danger for democracies both within Europe and beyond. In Asia, we have seen quite divergent developments. On the one hand, we have seen instances of democratic backsliding in some of the young Southeast Asian democracies (Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand), whereas other democracies in East Asia (Taiwan and South Korea) have shown a certain degree of resilience. After discussing the concept and its usefulness, the seminar looks at the underlying causes of this phenomenon, contours in different country contexts and the consequences of democratic resilience/ backsliding for the regional order.
