Contents
Human rights are under pressure at various levels. Specialized UN agencies and civil societies regularly document manifold violations perpetrated by states, non-state actors or a combination of both. At the same time, authoritarian governments try to weaken human rights standards by entering far-reaching reservations in the name of cultural or religious specificities or by claiming exceptions for security reasons. Some go a step farther by mixing human rights with undefined “traditional values” in order to blur the contours of the human rights approach in general. In the seminar, we will analyze these and other forms of attacking human rights. The right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) will serve as the main example (not as the only example). Apart from ongoing violations in all parts of the globe, FoRB has been exposed to far-reaching ideological distortions, which may even obscure its critical essence as a universal and egalitarian human right.
