Inhalt
Gender relations are central to historical and contemporary political and cultural formations in the modern Middle East. In the course we will explore the ways in which the social, political, economic, and cultural construction of gender difference influences the nature and practice of political life in the Middle East. The course consists of three parts. In the first part, we will theoretically examine the ways in which political power is gendered and how gendered social and political processes led to political inclusion or exclusion of women. This theoretical perspective will enable students to understand and critically analyze the relation between gender and politics. In the second part, the course provides a historical overview on women’s status and the “woman question” with a view on gendered aspects of colonialism, nationalism, modernization, secularism, and Islamism in the Middle East. In the third part, the seminar will focus on gendered themes in the contemporary Middle East such as mobilization of women’s movements, struggles of organized women, women’s legal rights, the gendered nature of the state, and participation of women in formal politics. In doing so, we will take several country case studies into account.
