- Since the beginning of this century, mass demonstrations and civil resistance movements have reached a new level both in Europe and beyond. East Asia has seen quite a number of these protest movements: from the Umbrella Protests in Hong Kong to the Sunflower Movement in Taiwan, from the student protests 2019 in Thailand to the February 2021 revolution in Burma. The seminar looks at these movements from the perspective of democratization: Why have some protest movements failed, while others have been successful in advancing democracy? Why did some movements prevent democratic backsliding, while others have not?
