- Inhalt
- How do human rights activists strategize? What are the different tactics at their disposal? How do they deal with mobilization obstacles, uncertainty and push-back? What are the power resources of human rights organizations? How does strategy-making in social movement organizations compare with strategy-making in professionalized non-governmental organizations (NGOs)? How does the organizational structure and funding base of NGOs impact what they do? Do professionalized NGOs prioritize organizational survival over goal attainment? Do they have an explicit theory of change? If so, how is this theory implemented in practice? And is it plausible? How do we know? Can the success of human rights activism be evaluated?
In this seminar, we will study the art and science of strategy-making in human rights contexts. We will read pertinent literature and investigate the actual practice of select organizations. Last but not least, the seminar will include experiential learning exercises in which we will apply the studied concepts to a real-life scenario. The grade will be based on a seminar paper in the form of a strategy memo that combines theoretical discussion and empirical analysis.
