- Phonetics 2/3 acts as sequel to the theory lecture (Phonetics 1), which students must have completed before they tackle the more practical follow-up courses Phonetics 2/3. As the title suggests, it focuses on the kinds of errors commonly made by German speakers of English, and how to overcome them. Students are confronted with recordings ranging from a strong German accent displaying all the typical pronunciation problems, up to the performance of very advanced learners. Attention is spent on making transparent the criteria of accent evaluation, both for the students' own performances as well as for the assessment of their future pupils. The course also attempts to foster a basic awareness of non-standard features of native English, which enhances the students' listening comprehension and helps them to put the characteristics of Standard English pronunciation (GA and RP) even more into focus.
In addition, students receive practical pronunciation training focusing on further improving what in most students' cases is already good pronunciation. Each student's individual pronunciation difficulties are identified and analyzed. As the course takes place in a multimedia language laboratory, the students can then work on them individually under the regular supervision of the teacher. The course is based on the tailor-made multimedia pronunciation course SoundAdvice, but may be complemented by various resources from the internet or from the Language Centre's own media server.
Students should choose either American English or British English on the basis of personal pronunciation and cultural interest. Both varieties will be taught online in winter semester 2021/22, which means that students should choose a course based on pronunciation preferences and independent of the locations (Erlangen or Nürnberg).
Vertiefungsmodul Language (UfE).
Es wird empfohlen, im Zuge des Studiums einer Fremdsprache einmal die Übung "Kickstart: Fremdsprachen lernen" (auf UNIVIS unter Sprachenzentrum > Sprachbezogene Zusatzqualifikationen in Erlangen) zu besuchen.
