Inhalt:

This course focuses on the interactions between society, the economy and climate change: one of the greatest challenges of our time.
The course will discuss the origin of environmental challenges, technological options for their solution and policies to promote the transformation to a climate neutral economy and society.

The following issues will be covered:

• Welfare economics and the environment

• Externalities and origins of the sustainability problem

• Climate change and the greenhouse gas effect

• Global climate scenarios

• Economics of low-carbon technologies

• Global and regional low carbon scenarios

• Pollution control: Targets and policy instruments

• International Cooperation: Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement

• Applications of Climate Policy: EU-ETS and national CO2-tax

• Case studies for the energy, heat and mobility sector

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Students who participate in this course will become familiar with the physical science basis of climate change, economic concepts for the allocation of public goods, scenarios for low-carbon energy systems from a technological and an economic perspective, and policy instruments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Students who successfully participate in this module can:

• Explain the physical basics of climate change

• Understand economic concepts for public goods

• Compare different low-carbon technologies

• Describe pathways towards sustainable energy systems

• Discuss different policy instruments

• Understand the EU-ETS and national carbon taxes

• Develop sector specific scenarios in case studies
