Empfohlene Voraussetzungen:

A solid knowledge of the basics of solid state physics is recommended for the seminar.

Inhalt:

The seminar will consist of weekly presentations on the topic of computer aided methods for the simulation of the physical properties of materials, in particular materials for reduced dimensionality.
Topics covered in the seminar will include:

• Density functional theory and related methods

• Tight-Binding and k.p

• Monte-Carlo methods

• Empirical potential methods

• Green function methods

• Density mean-field theory

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Students

• comprehend an interesting physical topic in a short time frame

• identify and interpret the appropriate literature

• select and organize the relevant information for the presentation

• compose a presentation on the topic at the appropriate level for the audience

• give a presentation to a scientific audience and use the appropriate presentation techniques and tools

• criticize and defend the topic in a scientific discussion

Literature will be given individually for each presentation topic.
