Inhalt:

• Systems of difference equations and of ordinary differential equations

• Existence and uniqueness of solutions, steady‐state solutions, linear stability analysis

• Qualitative behavior and phase plane analysis

• Discrete and continuous models for interacting populations (predator‐pray models, competition models, mutualism and symbiosis)

• Epidemic models and the dynamics of infectious diseases

• Reaction kinetics (mass‐action, enzyme kinetics)

• Regulation mechanisms in biological systems

• Excitable systems and dynamic behavior of neuronal membranes

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Students are able to

• analyse and simulate systems of ordinary differential equations

• possess profound knowledge in the area of mathematical modelling of processes in biology

• recognise the most important underlying mechanisms in biochemical and biophysical systems and give quantitative descriptions

• acquire problem‐oriented learning stategies and improve their skills in interdisciplinary approaches
