Inhalt:

Die linguistische Basisvorlesung befasst sich mit prinzipiellen und zentralen Fragen der Betrachtung der englischen Sprache. Dabei geht es sowohl um die Diskussion grundsätzlicher Positionen und Methoden der modernen Linguistik als auch um die Darstellung besonders charakteristischer Eigenschaften des Englischen. Einige dieser Eigenschaften finden sich tatsächlich in allen Sprachen der Welt, andere nur in Sprachen der gleichen Herkunft oder des gleichen Typs, wieder andere resultieren aus den Bedingungen des Kontakts mit anderen Sprachen oder aus der sozialen Organisation. Die einstündige Vorlesung wird sich mit einer Auswahl solcher grundlegender Eigenschaften des Gegenwartsenglischen und seiner Vorstufen befassen.

Die Linguistik hat die wissenschaftliche Erforschung der Sprache zum Gegenstand. Das Grundseminar Linguistics soll im Verbund mit dem Aufbauseminar und der Basisvorlesung (außer L-UF) einen Überblick über wesentliche Aspekte des Fachgebiets, über Herangehensweisen und Forschungsansätze geben. Dabei geht es um Fragen wie die folgenden: Wie lässt sich die Struktur der Sprache beschreiben? Zum Beispiel: Wie werden verschiedene Laute gebildet, welche Funktion haben Laute für die Kommunikation? Wie sind Wörter, wie sind Sätze aufgebaut? Wie verwenden Menschen Sprache? Wie unterscheidet sich die Sprache verschiedener Menschen, warum unterscheiden sich Menschen in ihrer Sprache? Warum und wie verändert sich Sprache? Was ist die Aufgabe der Sprachwissenschaft? Gibt es richtiges und falsches Englisch? Woher weiß man (gegebenenfalls), was richtiges Englisch ist? Wie können (eventuell) so gewonnene Erkenntnisse für das Lehren und Lernen einer Sprache genutzt werden? Gibt es bessere und schlechtere Grammatiken und Wörterbücher und wie merkt man das?

Ziel des Aufbauseminars English Linguistics II ist es,

• die im Grundseminar begonnene sprachliche Beschreibung auf den verschiedenen Ebenen (Phonologie, Morphologie, Syntax, etc.) zu vertiefen und insbesondere auch um die kontrastive (Deutsch-Englische) und historische Perspektive zu erweitern.

Since there is no agreement on the exact content of the branch of phraseology, this course will make an attempt to define these multi-word units (e.g. idioms, collocations, rhyming slang?), as well as their role in different linguistic theories (e.g. construction grammar, corpus linguistics). Also, since phraseology is one of the main sources of language errors by non-native speakers, application of phraseological knowledge to other fields, such as foreign language learning, translation studies and lexicography will be considered. Finally, this seminar will offer students an opportunity to use computer tools and/or specialised software for phraseological extraction and text analysis."

Analyzing dictionaries may appear as one of the most boring exercises in the world. It is the aim of this seminar to demonstrate that this is not so. On the contrary, fascinating new developments in linguistic research have been instigated by innovation in English learner lexicography during the last fifty years.
This seminar will concentrate on monolingual learner's dictionaries discussing topics such as:

• Providing comprehensible definitions

• Corpus data, collocation, idiom principle

• The dictionary as a production tool: verb patterns, valency, etc.
  

And finally we will have to address the issue of whether the availability of (poor quality?) online dictionaries means the end of commercial (high quality) lexicography.

This seminar will deal with different theories of meaning and the question of which linguistic units can rightly be called units of meaning. The focus will be not so much on boring traditional morphemes and words (whatever words are) but on multi-word combinations and abstract syntactic constructions, taking into account the findings of post-1990s corpus linguistics and cognitive linguistics.

Discussions will include questions such as what kinds of linguistic units carry meaning how the insights of modern linguistics can be usefully applied to language learning and language teaching to what extent these insights shatter structuralist views about the way language is organised.
Most of the discussions will be based within constructionist and usage-based theories.

How come that grammatical structures can be so elaborate, given that no one ever consciously invented them? Are there any clues on how language structure arose in the first place, how language may have developed from something like a “me, Tarzan” stage to displaying highly complex grammatical structures? Aren't languages becoming simpler all the time? With examples from a wide range of languages, these questions are addressed in Guy Deutscher’s The Unfolding of Language (2005) in a highly readable, general-audience style yet scholarly up-to-date way. On the basis of this book and additional literature (Bybee 2015 and others), this seminar is an introduction to the topic of language change but also language evolution.
You’ll be reading a section of Deutscher 2005 and other texts for each session (accompanied by a list of reading questions), which we will discuss in class and apply to further aspects from the history of English not touched upon in the book. The issues treated in Deutscher will be intensified by drawing on linguistic case studies and by hands-on exercises (particularly in the Begleitübung). "

Die Vorlesung ist Teil einer fortlaufend angebotenen anglistischen Vorlesungsreihe, die für Studierende im Hauptstudium konzipiert ist und vertieftes kanonisches Wissen im Bereich zentraler Epochen der englischen Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte (von der Frühen Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart) anbietet. – In dieser Vorlesung werden literarisch-kulturelle Umbrüche in der Romantik und die wichtigsten Entwicklungstendenzen im Viktorianismus vorgestellt. Neben 'kanonischen' literarischen Texten liegt dabei ein weiterer Schwerpunkt auf Aspekten, die bis heute kulturell relevant sind, so z.B. Film-Adaptationen (Jane Austen), populäre Mythen (Frankenstein, Dracula), Repräsentationen von Klassenkonflikten und Sexualitäts- oder Geschlechterdebatten. Die Vorlesung kann auch als Vorbereitung auf das Staatsexamen (Klausur ‚Körbchen-Themen‘) sowie als Anregung für vertiefende literatur- oder kulturwissenschaftliche Studien bzw. For quite a long time Ian McEwan has been regarded as the enfant terrible of contemporary English literature. As a young writer he shocked his audience by breaking taboos and by writing about sexuality and violence, meanwhile he belongs to the small circle of the most prestigious British writers. This lecture intends to study the many facets of McEwan’s literary work. After analyzing some of his early short stories we will concentrate on some of his most important novels: The Cement Garden (1978), The Comfort of Strangers (1981), The Child in Time (1987), Black Dogs (1992), Enduring Love (1997), Amsterdam (1998), Atonement (2001), Saturday (2005), Solar(2010), The Children Act (2014) and Nutshell (2016). We will discuss McEwan’s treatment of history, politics, religion and science. Our main focus will lie on the analysis of ethical problems in McEwan’s novels.

This seminar is an introduction to English and American Literary Studies. It addresses questions such as: What is literature and what does it mean to interpret it? What is a ‘canon’ and what accounts for its formation? How do we work critically with categories of literary history? What does literary criticism entail? The class presents basic methods and key concepts of literary studies and practices the use of adequate terminology and analytic reading skills. Participants will discuss introductory academic texts and deal with particular works of poetry, prose fiction, and drama.

This seminar is an introduction to English and American Literary Studies. It addresses questions such as: What is literature and what does it mean to interpret it? What is a ‘canon’ and what accounts for its formation? How do we work critically with categories of literary history? What does literary criticism entail? The class presents basic methods and key concepts of literary studies and practices the use of adequate terminology and analytic reading skills. The relationship between humans and animals is schizophrenic: we adore them as pets, in zoos and in Youtube videos, yet our society also hunts, kills and eats millions of animals every year. In the light of factory farming and species extinction, ‘veganism’ and ‘animal rights’ have become popular buzzwords. In this seminar, we will interrogate from a historically and theoretically informed perspective how and with which consequences human civilisation legitimises its distinction from and treatment of animals. Our aim is to explore how literature and culture have responded to these issues and have they have constructed the animal and its subjectivity. After an introduction to central concepts from the fields of ecocriticism, posthumanism and animal studies, we will discuss how animals have been represented in Anglophone poetry, narrative fiction and popular culture since the late nineteenth century.

We cannot think of culture without thinking of the body: From the everyday fashioning and stylizing of our bodies, ways of disciplining and subjecting them to societal norms and values, to forms of embodied resistance - the body plays a crucial role in constituting the ‘self’ and is simultaneously notoriously difficult to define. This seminar aims to explore different avenues to the idea and materiality of the ‘body’ and considers conceptions of it as a discursive product, as a carrier of identity, determined by embodied aspects such as ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or social class, to considerations of it as a site of construction where the development and alteration of cultural values and norms becomes visible. Not only our theoretical access to the body, but also our analyses of different forms of representation will be marked by plurality: Thus, we will look at selected examples from literature, media (such as news, TV series, film), and art, and consider normative vs. deviant, gendered, raced, sexualized, or posthuman and artificial bodies. Longer works we will read include H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau (Oxford World's Classics edition) and Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (Oxford World's Classics edition). The culture of the 18th century is characterised by an intense affiliation of literature with philosophy, art, science and religion. Seen from an aesthetic point of view, the period reveals a fascinating tension, usually referred to as the Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes: on the one hand, the epoch strictly follows ancient examples of writing thus creating the spirit of 'neoclassicism'; on the other hand, it tries to get rid of ancient rules and prescriptions by introducing new genres and innovative ways of writing. In this introductory seminar we will try to focus on the most important ideas, notions, issues and theories of the 18th century by analysing literary examples from various genres: novel writing, essays, the drama, and poetry. We will study Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), selections from the most famous moral weeklies of the time, The Tatler (1709) and The Spectator (1711-1712; 1714), sections of Alexander Pope’s didactic poem An Essay on Man (1733-1734), and Oliver Goldsmith's comedy She Stoops to Conquer (1773).

"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold". Dieses Gefühl von Orientierungsverlust, das von W.B. Yeats in seinem Gedicht "The Second Coming" zum Ausdruck gebracht wird, spiegelt die Verwirrung mancher Studierender wider, die sich zum ersten Mal mit der Lyrik des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts konfrontiert sehen. Ihr experimenteller, oft elitärer Charakter hat moderner Lyrik den Ruf eingebracht, "schwierig" zu sein und eine "hermetische Welt" zu erschaffen, die für alle Nicht-Eingeweihten unzugänglich bleibt (Gelfert). Dieses Seminar stellt Ausdrucksformen moderner und zeitgenössischer Lyrik in ihrer gesamten Bandbreite in den Mittelpunkt. Es befasst sich mit lyrischer Sprache und unterschiedlichen 'Schulen' oder 'Traditionen', beispielsweise war poets, Georgians, Imagisten oder the Movement. Neben jenen Dichtern, deren Werke häufig in Anthologien erfasst werden, wie etwa W.B. Yeats, Wilfred Owen, W.H. Auden, T.S. Eliot, Philip Larkin, Dylan Thomas und Seamus Heaney werden auch eine Reihe zeitgenössischer Lyriker wie poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, Andrew Motion und Jackie Kay diskutiert. Studierende, die sich bisher vor allem mit Romanen befasst haben, werden Autoren, die ihnen bereits durch ihre Prosawerke bekannt sind, als Lyriker neu entdecken, beispielsweise Thomas Hardy und D.H. This seminar will introduce you to contemporary literary and cultural/media studies approaches as a means of understanding and re-evaluating Shakespeare’s works. The discussion will have a double focus, allowing us a) to examine Shakespeare’s writing style and the dramatic structure of the plays and b) to trace popular reworkings and re-imaginings of Shakespeare’s texts in modern film adaptations. Topics to be discussed include: poetic and cinematic language; the politics of gender and race – then and now; Bardolatry, or, Shakespeare as a cultural myth; the history and theory of adaptation. – It is essential that all participants read and reflect upon the texts before each class. You should enrol for a short oral presentation before the beginning of term (see the list in our library, C 603); B.A. and M.A. students are expected to participate in the Independent Study Group. The era between 1890 and 1900 - frequently referred to as "The Nineties" or "The English Fin de Siècle" by literary critics - is one of the most fascinating periods in literary history. It was intensely characterised by social tensions, achievements in both science and technology and provocative theories of art in general and literature in particular. Since the fin de siècle is no isolated national phenomenon, its literature has to be interpreted against the backdrop of significant international ideas, including 'naturalism', (French) 'symbolism', and 'decadence'. After studying the culture of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and William Morris's 'Arts and Crafts Movement', we will focus on significant fin de siècle texts such as Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), his theoretical essays "The Critic as Artist" (1891) and "The Decay of Lying" (1891), Walter Pater's “Conclusion” (Studies in the History of the Renaissance, 1873) and Arthur Symons's The Symbolist Movement (1899). We will also read and interpret the poems of Austin Dobson, Ernest Christopher Dowson and Algernon Swinburne.

This course is meant to deepen and practice (text)analytical skills and categories acquired in the course of your previous studies. In order to do so, we will study various (mainly canonical) examples of English literature from different centuries covering the three major genres. The Victorian period, a period of enormous economic, political, social, technological, scientific, artistic and literary innovation and change, is a rich period for research. We will explore the diverse facets of nineteenth-century British culture with a view to developing a historical framework and research methodology for advanced cultural studies. Inhalt:

The Master Course provides a detailed examination, contextualization and discussion of a theoretical concept and its (historically specific) application. In this seminar we will focus on the concept of (legal) identity. We will focus on the figure of the pirate as an individual that defies easy legal classifications – privateers and pirates, for instance, essentially engage in the same activities, but while the former are state-sanctioned in their sea-faring robberies, the latter are stereotypically defined as ‘the enemies of all mankind’. As the term progresses, we will discuss how literary texts increasingly disengage from this depiction of the pirate as a legal ‘problem’ and the pirate gains a literary identity of his/her own.
Students will be expected to conduct substantial amounts of independent and self-reliant work in the seminar. They will also be trained in presenting and defending the findings of their research. This course also focuses on presentation skills that especially address the needs of MA-students, who will present a paper in the context of a student conference, with discussion.

This lecture offers a comprehensive and systematic overview of American Studies as a multidisciplinary field of scholarship with Cultural Studies at its center. We will look at Cultural Studies-approaches that address the national level (such as American exceptionalism and the myth-and-symbol school), the subnational level (such as minority discourses, gender studies, working class/Marxist interpretations of American culture, popular culture studies) as well as the transnational level of inquiry (such as transatlantic studies and inter-American scholarship including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean). To illustrate the different perspectives and theoretical paradigms we will draw on a wide range of American Studies-sources ranging from historical documents (such as maps, passenger lists, court records and sermons), literature (such as poetry, novels, memoirs), visual culture (such as painting, photography, and film), material culture (such as clothing, cars, and toys), and every-day culture (such as schoolbooks, ceremonies, national holidays, and memorial culture). Thus, we will come to understand the forces, issues and themes that drive American culture as a multi-facetted and complex set of systems and texts.

Inhalt:

This lecture gives an overview of the development of literary studies in the US from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present. The lecture outlines the changes as far as the understanding of American literature and the function of literary studies are concerned, and it also seeks to give an advanced introduction to literary theory. We will start with attempts to define the special character of American literature, then we will discuss theoretical approaches such as New Criticism, structuralism, poststructuralism, African American literary criticism, and postcolonial criticism. The lecture is supplemented by an Übung in which students are offered the opportunity to discuss a broad range of texts from the history of North American poetics and literary studies.
The module closes with a 20 minutes oral exam.

Inhalt:

Vielfach beschworen ist die deutsche „Erfolgsgeschichte“ nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hinsichtlich der Eingliederung West-Deutschlands in die westliche Staatengemeinschaft, die Abkehr vom Faschismus und die Entwicklung neuer demokratischer Strukturen. Dies alles erfolgte zunächst in weiten Teilen unter US-amerikanischer Besatzung bzw. Einflussnahme. Das Seminar widmet sich den Maßnahmen der sog. Umerziehung/Reeducation, mit denen die Amerikaner die Deutschen sowohl bestrafen als auch reformerisch prägen wollten: mit Filmen, Büchern und zahlreichen kulturellen Angeboten, aber auch durch die Veränderung des Schulsystems und durch politische Reformen. Gleichzeitig wird nach den langfristigen Auswirkungen der Nachkriegszeit auf die transatlantischen Beziehungen insbesondere in politischen und kulturellen Kontexten gefragt.

Ziel des Proseminars ist die Beschäftigung mit den deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen, ausgehend von den Friedensregelungen nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg bis zum amerikanischen Eintritt in den Zweiten Weltkrieg im Dezember 1941. Wechselseitige Aktions- und Reaktionsmuster zwischen den deutschen Regierungen der „Weimarer Republik“ und ab 1933 dem nationalsozialistischen Regime einerseits, sowie den amerikanischen Administrationen von Warren G. Harding bis Franklin Delano Roosevelt andererseits sollen dabei ebenso analysiert werden wie die Rolle, die Innen-, Wirtschafts- und Militärpolitik für die Politikformulierung spielten.

Obwohl Kanada nach Daten des Statistischen Bundesamt unter den 20 wichtigsten Zielländern deutscher AuswandererInnen (2016) rangierte und für seine Landschaften, seine Tierwelt aber wohl vor allem für das Eishockeyhalbfinale gegen Deutschland bei den Olympischen Winterspielen 2018 bekannt ist, scheint es im Schatten seines berühmten Nachbarn, den USA zu stehen. Und dies zu Unrecht, hat Kanada doch gerade auch für Politikwissenschaftler eine Vielzahl an spannenden Forschungsgegenständen zu bieten. Kanadas oft beschworene Einwanderungspolitik, Multikulturalismus, Bilingualismus, relative Mehrheitswahl (first-past-the-post), Föderalismus und Regionalismus sowie Mittelmacht und Human Security in der Außenpolitik sind nur einige der Merkmale, die das politische System Kanadas auszeichnen und eine Untersuchung in vielfältigen Bereichen interessant machen. Der Konflikt zwischen dem englischsprachigen und dem französischsprachigen Teil Kanadas, der sich unter anderem in der Entstehung einer separatistischen Bewegung (manifestiert zum Beispiel durch die Partei Bloc Québécois) ausdrückte, oder die langjährige Dominanz der Liberalen Partei Kanadas, die aus der Bundeswahl 2011 nur noch als drittstärkste Partei im kanadischen Unterhaus hervorging (34 gewählte Abgeordnete) und bei der Bundeswahl 2015 mit mehr als fünfach so vielen Abgeordnete (184 ) ihr vorläufiges Comeback feierte, lässt mit Spannung auf das Wahljahr 2019 blicken. In dem Proseminar sollen die drei Dimensionen von Politik (Polity/Policy/Politics) sowie verschiedene Untersuchungsansätze (z.B. institutionentheoretische Ansätze, politisch psychologischer Ansatz, Rational Choice Ansatz, politisch soziologische Ansätze) am Beispiel Kanadas erläutert werden. Dabei sollen folgende Themen behandelt werden: Verfassungsentwicklung und Verfassungsprinzipien, Parlament, Regierung, Verwaltung, Wahlsystem, Parteiensystem, Interessenverbände, Massenmedien, politische Kultur und politische Partizipation, Rechtsystem und internationale Beziehungen. Zudem sollen die drei policy issues Wirtschaft, soziale Sicherheit sowie "nationale Einheit" näher beleuchtet werden.

This seminar is an internet-based survey course that offers students in the “Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaft” an overview of the main developments in US-American literary history. The class will help students to understand the links between literary periods, their central ideas, and important stylistic features. The course provides participants with detailed information about the complexities that underlie and connect each literary work and period. The course’s other main goal is to familiarize students with key texts and key discourses of US-American literature, such as race, class, and gender. The texts were chosen because they either represent crucial aspects of their respective literary periods, or because they address topics and concepts that were controversial at this particular point in history.
Despite being an E-Learning course, this is a discussion-based class, so active participation is crucial. Participants are required to contribute to class discussions by posting at least two quality responses per forum. Your learning process will be enabled through your active involvement in the different assignments, which are designed to allow you as much creative freedom as possible while assisting you in your reading and understanding of the poems, short stories, novels, and plays.

“Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives” (Audre Lorde).
This seminar will provide an explorative survey of the diverse and vibrant tendencies that have shaped the field(s) of North American poetry since the beginning of the twentieth century. You will become acquainted with the work of a broad range of poets and with significant movements in twentieth-century North American poetry – e.g., Imagism, Beat poetry, the New York School, the Black Arts Movement. Furthermore, we will examine recent tendencies in contemporary poetry, such as conceptualism, so-called “uncreative writing,” and “hybrid poetry,” which have emerged under the impression of digitalization, globalization, and current socio-political developments. We will discuss the poetic texts not only in terms of their form and content but also take into consideration the historical and cultural contexts in which they are situated. Interactions of poetry with other forms of artistic practice (e.g., painting, music, performance art) and with popular culture will be addressed as well.
Serving as an introduction to the study of poetry, this seminar will also touch upon key concepts and methods of poetry analysis and poetic theory. We will scrutinize how poetry produces meaning(s) and how it may generate fascinating modes of (critical) thinking and feeling.

Inhalt:

“Pillow power”; “ornamental part of the presidency”, “symbol of American womanhood” are among the many controversial labels assigned to the First Lady of the US by the few scholarly studies in existence. She is not elected, but resides at the center of the executive branch. She may assume the roles of hostess and mother, interior designer or welfare activist, but she may never meddle in the realm of politics. And yet, the First Lady ‘office’ holds the potential of becoming an influencer, style icon, activist—and even politician.

This course discusses the changing views of the First Lady in the US culture from the Early Republic through the present by looking at historical case studies as well as fictional First Ladies personas. We will discuss “FLOTUS” through a number of perspectives from American Cultural Studies, including civil religion, feminisms, celebrity studies, and fashion studies to assess the public personas different First Ladies have developed in the White House. Specifically, our focus will lie on readings of FLOTUS in popular culture and biography, as well as texts written by First ladies themselves. Case studies will include Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton, as well as Jackie Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt.

In recent years, social and cultural constructions of masculinity have become an important focus of gender studies and cultural studies alike. Talk about, for example, a (white) male ‘crisis’ or “the end of men” (H. Rosin) abounds, suggesting that rigid and all-too stereotypical constructions of masculinity are in dire need of an update. At the same time, this questioning of rather traditional understandings of masculinity is met by a “backlash” (S. Faludi) with blatant displays of ‘toxic’ masculinity taking center stage in contemporary US-American culture. Scrutinizing a broad range of examples – from music to literature, film, and television to advertisements and ‘social’ media – we will discuss contemporary representations of masculinity in US-American culture and examine how masculine identities intersect with and are shaped by other categories, such as age, class, race, sexuality, or health.

In this course, we will investigate the intersections of white supremacy and popular culture in the United States. We will highlight the contexts from which the movement originated, its current state in the US, as well as its discursive constructions of race, nation, individual and collective identities. Our goal will be to explore the paradoxical connections between the radical-right milieu and American mainstream society, often wrongly considered as two separate entities. We will connect the extreme visions of race, society and popular culture to more mainstream understandings; despite obvious differences both emerge from a common discursive field and share similar visions for the future. The course focuses on cultural representations of white supremacy in cultural texts (movies, music, television…) but also on the re-appropriation of those media by the movement itself.

Inhalt:

Die alte NATO, Fixpunkt europäischer Sicherheitspolitik und tragende Säule im transatlantischen Verhältnis scheint in der Krise. Bei aller pragmatischen Zuwendung zum transatlantischen Bündnis scheint die EU zunehmend auf Strukturen autonomer strategischer Aktionsfähigkeit angewiesen. Gerade im Nahen Osten, in Afrika, aber auch in der Ukraine wirkt die Politik der USA aktuell krisenverschärfend und ist nicht von einer Interessenparallelität mit den europäischen Partnern geprägt. Das Seminar stellt entsprechend die Frage inwieweit die traditionelle North Atlantic Treaty Organisation auf diese Herausforderungen reagiert, ob es historische Parallelen zur heutigen Situation gibt, oder ob Europa zwangsläufig eigenständige Wege zur Sicherung seiner strategischen Interessen finden muss.

According to the anti-colonial revolutionary Amílcar Cabral, Joseph Goebbels pulled out his gun every time someone mentioned the term “culture”. For Cabral, this is evidence of the importance of culture for both the domination of peoples and for overthrowing that domination. Expectedly, he reserved a prominent role for culture in the anti-colonial war that he fought. Cabral was no exception, and in fact, most anti-colonial liberation movements included the production of anti-colonial culture—fictional as well as non-fictional.
In this course, we examine and juxtapose several anti-colonial works from different geographical locations. We investigate what problems the texts pose, what solutions they appear to offer, what techniques are used, and what fallacies they may contain. We scrutinize the ways in which these aspects differ from one place of production to another, and how fictional and non-fictional anti-colonial works relate. Departing from texts written during colonization, we proceed to works published after ‘decolonization’—a term we will interrogate. Our inquiry stops before the institutionalization of so-called ‘postcolonial theory’ at the end of the 1980s.

“Canadians are nice and polite. It’s not just a stereotype.”-- Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau’s embrace of stereotypes posits Canadians as the better North Americans in a move that is typically Canadian—distinguishing Canada from all things south of the 49th parallel. This seminar examines key topics in Canadian Studies, ranging from debates over “Canadianness” to the relation of Canadian Studies to (North) American Studies. We will discuss cultural specifics ranging from indigenous knowledges and epistemologies, multiculturalism, regionalisms and Prairie Writing, Black and Asian Canadian Studies, up to the most recent phenomenon of Canadian Exceptionalism—focussing on questions such as: is Canada a postcolonial nation? What are Canadian national myths? What view of Canadianness do Canadian studies project?
Our reading list includes, among others, short fiction by Margaret Atwood and Aritha van Herk, essays from literary historian Northrop Frye’s The Bush Garden, the Western comedy Gunless (2010), the graphic biography Louis Riel by Chester Brown and Thomas King’s short story “Borders”.

The seminar is accompanied by an Independent Study Group (ISG) for BA students who will be required to compile and present a book review.

For BA students, the class offers an independent study group which will focus on the reproductions of Puritanism in visual culture.

Inhalt:

“A diffuse […] sense of missions permeates our lives, private and public, in the United States”. Thus wrote Leo Marx in the New York Times about Sacvan Bercovitch’s The Puritan Origins of the American Self when it first came out in 1976, the bicentennial year of the founding of the US. Throughout US history, the essence of American character, its “mission” is routinely ascribed to Puritanism, with its dual heritage of dissent and struggle for reform and political activism. Puritanism becomes the magic formula for Americanness, New England, in a hyperbolic move, serves as the cradle of the nation. This seminar revisits original Puritan texts, critically examines their burgeoning into a national myth in historiography and literary criticism, and traces the representation of Puritanism in two canonized literary texts, Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter (1850) and Miller’s The Crucible (1853). We will discuss the latter through recourse to film versions and historical contexts.

The reading list includes primary texts by the Puritans and their followers (Mather, Bradford, Bushnell) as well as an overview on New England scholarship from Perry Miller to Sacvan Bercovitch and George McKenna. Inhalt:

The course will study the US American novel from its transatlantic beginnings to the late nineteenth century. We will discuss the rise of fiction and the genre of the novel in its social, economic, and cultural contexts and within the intersection of race, class, gender, and national discourses. How does the novel emerge from economic conditions of a literary market? What are its circumstances of production and reception, its conditions and its social functions at a given time?

Note: Please be aware that, by definition, novels are longer prose texts. Reading especially the earlier examples will take patience and effort, and students will be expected to be willing to engage with fictional texts as well as with theoretical texts on the aesthetic and poetological debates of its time. If you feel that you cannot make time for such reading in your personal schedule and semester workload, this class may not be a good fit for you.

Wahrheit gilt als oberste Maxime des Journalismus und wird als eine der zentralen ethischen Anforderungen an Medien in freiheitlichen Demokratien verstanden. Medien haben einen verfassungsrechtlichen Auftrag, die Öffentlichkeit zu informieren und dadurch die Meinungsbildung und politische Teilhabe zu ermöglichen. Medien stehen allerdings seit ihrer Verbreitung, aber verstärkt in den letzten Jahren, unter dem Verdacht der Manipulation, Täuschung und gar Lügen. Ob der Vorwurf zur „Lügenpresse“, sogenannte „Fake News“ oder Fehlberichterstattungen: Im Zuge technischer Veränderungen, voran selbst lernenden Systemen, Künstlicher Intelligenz oder neueren Entwicklungen wie Deep Fakes oder Filterblasen rund um soziale Medien stehen Diskussionen um die Glaubwürdigkeit von Medien erneut im Fokus. Gerade der USA-Wahlkampf 2016 hat veranschaulicht, wie fragil das Verhältnis von Medien und Wahrheit sein kann. So galten mehr als 70 Prozent von Trumps Aussagen im Wahlkampf als nachweislich falsch und fanden dennoch Gehör, weil sie im Netz, auf Twitter oder Facebook verbreitet wurden. Auf dem Hintergrund von Diskussionen rund um „Fake News Awards“ und dem sogenannten „postfaktischen Zeitalter“ stellt sich die Frage nach und Ansprüche auf Wahrheit im digitalen Zeitalter damit neu und verweist auf die Dringlichkeit medienethischer Reflexion.

Was aber kann, darf und soll wahr bzw. wahrhaftig sein in den Medien? Was überhaupt ist aus philosophischer Sicht Wahrheit? Welche Bedeutung hat sie in den und für die Medien? Und welche moralischen Pflichten existieren gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit? Das Seminar untersucht anhand von verschiedenen Themenkomplexen und Fallbeispielen die allgemein erkenntnistheoretische Frage nach Wahrheit sowie die medienethische Forderung nach Wahrheit und Sorgfalt im Kontext von Journalismus, Unterhaltungs- und Werbeformaten sowie sozialen Medien mit einem Fokus auf dem US-Wahlkampf. Dabei vorzunehmende Differenzierungen sollen zur Auseinandersetzung dazu einladen, in wieweit Lüge bzw. Täuschung von und durch Medien moralisch gerechtfertigt werden kann und wie die daraus folgende Medienregulierung aussehen sollte.

Das Seminar besteht aus theoretischen Anteilen, Fallstudien und Gastvorträgen zum Thema und ist interdisziplinär angelegt.

Inhalt:

Dieser Kurs bietet eine systematische Einführung in das Gebiet der interamerikanistischen Kultur- und Literaturwissenschaft. Die Kulturen und Literaturen der Amerikas werden hier jenseits nationaler Grenzziehungen und der Zweiteilung „Nord/Süd“ aus vergleichender Perspektive betrachtet. Solch eine hemisphärische Amerikanistik steht im Zeichen postnationaler Ansätze, die sich in der Nord- und Lateinamerikanistik seit den frühen 1990er Jahren im Zuge eines „transnational turns“ entwickelt haben. In dem Kurs werden alternative Modelle zur wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung der Amerikas diskutiert und kulturtheoretische Fragestellungen und kulturpolitische Implikationen erörtert, die sich aus den historisch bedingten Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden (z.B. europäische Besiedlung und Kolonialismus, gewaltsame Konflikte, diverse Protest- und Emanzipationsbewegungen) sowie den interamerikanischen Beziehungen ergeben.

This course will introduce future teachers to research methods that can be used to examine second/foreign language classrooms. It is particularly aimed at students who intend to write their "Zulassungsarbeit" in the field of foreign language learning and teaching. Becoming familiar with classroom-based research methods not only enables students and teachers to do research in their own second/foreign language classrooms, it also provides a solid basis for assessing the findings of previous research. We will discuss different types of research and research methods that can be used to examine teachers' and learners' attitudes and behaviors in the second/foreign language classroom. According to the anti-colonial revolutionary Amílcar Cabral, Joseph Goebbels pulled out his gun every time someone mentioned the term “culture”. For Cabral, this is evidence of the importance of culture for both the domination of peoples and for overthrowing that domination. Expectedly, he reserved a prominent role for culture in the anti-colonial war that he fought. Cabral was no exception, and in fact, most anti-colonial liberation movements included the production of anti-colonial culture—fictional as well as non-fictional.
In this course, we examine and juxtapose several anti-colonial works from different geographical locations. We investigate what problems the texts pose, what solutions they appear to offer, what techniques are used, and what fallacies they may contain. We scrutinize the ways in which these aspects differ from one place of production to another, and how fictional and non-fictional anti-colonial works relate. Departing from texts written during colonization, we proceed to works published after ‘decolonization’—a term we will interrogate. Our inquiry stops before the institutionalization of so-called ‘postcolonial theory’ at the end of the 1980s.

“Canadians are nice and polite. It’s not just a stereotype.”-- Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau’s embrace of stereotypes posits Canadians as the better North Americans in a move that is typically Canadian—distinguishing Canada from all things south of the 49th parallel. This seminar examines key topics in Canadian Studies, ranging from debates over “Canadianness” to the relation of Canadian Studies to (North) American Studies. We will discuss cultural specifics ranging from indigenous knowledges and epistemologies, multiculturalism, regionalisms and Prairie Writing, Black and Asian Canadian Studies, up to the most recent phenomenon of Canadian Exceptionalism—focussing on questions such as: is Canada a postcolonial nation? What are Canadian national myths? What view of Canadianness do Canadian studies project?
Our reading list includes, among others, short fiction by Margaret Atwood and Aritha van Herk, essays from literary historian Northrop Frye’s The Bush Garden, the Western comedy Gunless (2010), the graphic biography Louis Riel by Chester Brown and Thomas King’s short story “Borders”.

The seminar is accompanied by an Independent Study Group (ISG) for BA students who will be required to compile and present a book review.

For BA students, the class offers an independent study group which will focus on the reproductions of Puritanism in visual culture.

Inhalt:

“A diffuse […] sense of missions permeates our lives, private and public, in the United States”. Thus wrote Leo Marx in the New York Times about Sacvan Bercovitch’s The Puritan Origins of the American Self when it first came out in 1976, the bicentennial year of the founding of the US. Throughout US history, the essence of American character, its “mission” is routinely ascribed to Puritanism, with its dual heritage of dissent and struggle for reform and political activism. Puritanism becomes the magic formula for Americanness, New England, in a hyperbolic move, serves as the cradle of the nation. This seminar revisits original Puritan texts, critically examines their burgeoning into a national myth in historiography and literary criticism, and traces the representation of Puritanism in two canonized literary texts, Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter (1850) and Miller’s The Crucible (1853). We will discuss the latter through recourse to film versions and historical contexts.

The course will study the US American novel from its transatlantic beginnings to the late nineteenth century. We will discuss the rise of fiction and the genre of the novel in its social, economic, and cultural contexts and within the intersection of race, class, gender, and national discourses. How does the novel emerge from economic conditions of a literary market? What are its circumstances of production and reception, its conditions and its social functions at a given time?

Note: Please be aware that, by definition, novels are longer prose texts. Reading especially the earlier examples will take patience and effort, and students will be expected to be willing to engage with fictional texts as well as with theoretical texts on the aesthetic and poetological debates of its time. If you feel that you cannot make time for such reading in your personal schedule and semester workload, this class may not be a good fit for you.

This lecture offers a comprehensive and systematic overview of American Studies as a multidisciplinary field of scholarship with Cultural Studies at its center. We will look at Cultural Studies-approaches that address the national level (such as American exceptionalism and the myth-and-symbol school), the subnational level (such as minority discourses, gender studies, working class/Marxist interpretations of American culture, popular culture studies) as well as the transnational level of inquiry (such as transatlantic studies and inter-American scholarship including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean). To illustrate the different perspectives and theoretical paradigms we will draw on a wide range of American Studies-sources ranging from historical documents (such as maps, passenger lists, court records and sermons), literature (such as poetry, novels, memoirs), visual culture (such as painting, photography, and film), material culture (such as clothing, cars, and toys), and every-day culture (such as schoolbooks, ceremonies, national holidays, and memorial culture). Thus, we will come to understand the forces, issues and themes that drive American culture as a multi-facetted and complex set of systems and texts.
This lecture is a requirement in the Master North American Studies: Culture and Literature and in the Master The Americas/Las Américas. Inhalt:

This lecture gives an overview of the development of literary studies in the US from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present. The lecture outlines the changes as far as the understanding of American literature and the function of literary studies are concerned, and it also seeks to give an advanced introduction to literary theory. We will start with attempts to define the special character of American literature, then we will discuss theoretical approaches such as New Criticism, structuralism, poststructuralism, African American literary criticism, and postcolonial criticism. The lecture is supplemented by an Übung in which students are offered the opportunity to discuss a broad range of texts from the history of North American poetics and literary studies.
The module closes with a 20 minutes oral exam.

Inhalt:

Wahrheit gilt als oberste Maxime des Journalismus und wird als eine der zentralen ethischen Anforderungen an Medien in freiheitlichen Demokratien verstanden. Medien haben einen verfassungsrechtlichen Auftrag, die Öffentlichkeit zu informieren und dadurch die Meinungsbildung und politische Teilhabe zu ermöglichen. Medien stehen allerdings seit ihrer Verbreitung, aber verstärkt in den letzten Jahren, unter dem Verdacht der Manipulation, Täuschung und gar Lügen. Ob der Vorwurf zur „Lügenpresse“, sogenannte „Fake News“ oder Fehlberichterstattungen: Im Zuge technischer Veränderungen, voran selbst lernenden Systemen, Künstlicher Intelligenz oder neueren Entwicklungen wie Deep Fakes oder Filterblasen rund um soziale Medien stehen Diskussionen um die Glaubwürdigkeit von Medien erneut im Fokus. Gerade der USA-Wahlkampf 2016 hat veranschaulicht, wie fragil das Verhältnis von Medien und Wahrheit sein kann. So galten mehr als 70 Prozent von Trumps Aussagen im Wahlkampf als nachweislich falsch und fanden dennoch Gehör, weil sie im Netz, auf Twitter oder Facebook verbreitet wurden. Auf dem Hintergrund von Diskussionen rund um „Fake News Awards“ und dem sogenannten „postfaktischen Zeitalter“ stellt sich die Frage nach und Ansprüche auf Wahrheit im digitalen Zeitalter damit neu und verweist auf die Dringlichkeit medienethischer Reflexion.

Was aber kann, darf und soll wahr bzw. wahrhaftig sein in den Medien? Was überhaupt ist aus philosophischer Sicht Wahrheit? Welche Bedeutung hat sie in den und für die Medien? Und welche moralischen Pflichten existieren gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit? Das Seminar untersucht anhand von verschiedenen Themenkomplexen und Fallbeispielen die allgemein erkenntnistheoretische Frage nach Wahrheit sowie die medienethische Forderung nach Wahrheit und Sorgfalt im Kontext von Journalismus, Unterhaltungs- und Werbeformaten sowie sozialen Medien mit einem Fokus auf dem US-Wahlkampf. Dabei vorzunehmende Differenzierungen sollen zur Auseinandersetzung dazu einladen, in wieweit Lüge bzw. Täuschung von und durch Medien moralisch gerechtfertigt werden kann und wie die daraus folgende Medienregulierung aussehen sollte.

Das Seminar besteht aus theoretischen Anteilen, Fallstudien und Gastvorträgen zum Thema und ist interdisziplinär angelegt.

How come that grammatical structures can be so elaborate, given that no one ever consciously invented them? Are there any clues on how language structure arose in the first place, how language may have developed from something like a “me, Tarzan” stage to displaying highly complex grammatical structures? Aren't languages becoming simpler all the time? With examples from a wide range of languages, these questions are addressed in Guy Deutscher’s The Unfolding of Language (2005) in a highly readable, general-audience style yet scholarly up-to-date way. On the basis of this book and additional literature (Bybee 2015 and others), this seminar is an introduction to the topic of language change but also language evolution.
You’ll be reading a section of Deutscher 2005 and other texts for each session (accompanied by a list of reading questions), which we will discuss in class and apply to further aspects from the history of English not touched upon in the book. The issues treated in Deutscher will be intensified by drawing on linguistic case studies and by hands-on exercises (particularly in the Begleitübung). "

Analyzing dictionaries may appear as one of the most boring exercises in the world. It is the aim of this seminar to demonstrate that this is not so. On the contrary, fascinating new developments in linguistic research have been instigated by innovation in English learner lexicography during the last fifty years.
This seminar will concentrate on monolingual learner's dictionaries discussing topics such as:

• Providing comprehensible definitions

• Corpus data, collocation, idiom principle

• The dictionary as a production tool: verb patterns, valency, etc.
  

And finally we will have to address the issue of whether the availability of (poor quality?) online dictionaries means the end of commercial (high quality) lexicography.

Inhalt:

This course will introduce future teachers to research methods that can be used to examine second/foreign language classrooms. It is particularly aimed at students who intend to write their "Zulassungsarbeit" in the field of foreign language learning and teaching. Becoming familiar with classroom-based research methods not only enables students and teachers to do research in their own second/foreign language classrooms, it also provides a solid basis for assessing the findings of previous research. We will discuss different types of research and research methods that can be used to examine teachers' and learners' attitudes and behaviors in the second/foreign language classroom. All students will be asked to describe a research project based on specific research methods such as interviews, questionnaires, case studies or observations.

This seminar will deal with different theories of meaning and the question of which linguistic units can rightly be called units of meaning. The focus will be not so much on boring traditional morphemes and words (whatever words are) but on multi-word combinations and abstract syntactic constructions, taking into account the findings of post-1990s corpus linguistics and cognitive linguistics.

Discussions will include questions such as what kinds of linguistic units carry meaning how the insights of modern linguistics can be usefully applied to language learning and language teaching to what extent these insights shatter structuralist views about the way language is organised.
Most of the discussions will be based within constructionist and usage-based theories.

According to the anti-colonial revolutionary Amílcar Cabral, Joseph Goebbels pulled out his gun every time someone mentioned the term “culture”. For Cabral, this is evidence of the importance of culture for both the domination of peoples and for overthrowing that domination. Expectedly, he reserved a prominent role for culture in the anti-colonial war that he fought. Cabral was no exception, and in fact, most anti-colonial liberation movements included the production of anti-colonial culture—fictional as well as non-fictional.
In this course, we examine and juxtapose several anti-colonial works from different geographical locations. We investigate what problems the texts pose, what solutions they appear to offer, what techniques are used, and what fallacies they may contain. We scrutinize the ways in which these aspects differ from one place of production to another, and how fictional and non-fictional anti-colonial works relate. Departing from texts written during colonization, we proceed to works published after ‘decolonization’—a term we will interrogate. Our inquiry stops before the institutionalization of so-called ‘postcolonial theory’ at the end of the 1980s.

“Canadians are nice and polite. It’s not just a stereotype.”-- Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau’s embrace of stereotypes posits Canadians as the better North Americans in a move that is typically Canadian—distinguishing Canada from all things south of the 49th parallel. This seminar examines key topics in Canadian Studies, ranging from debates over “Canadianness” to the relation of Canadian Studies to (North) American Studies. We will discuss cultural specifics ranging from indigenous knowledges and epistemologies, multiculturalism, regionalisms and Prairie Writing, Black and Asian Canadian Studies, up to the most recent phenomenon of Canadian Exceptionalism—focussing on questions such as: is Canada a postcolonial nation? What are Canadian national myths? What view of Canadianness do Canadian studies project?
Our reading list includes, among others, short fiction by Margaret Atwood and Aritha van Herk, essays from literary historian Northrop Frye’s The Bush Garden, the Western comedy Gunless (2010), the graphic biography Louis Riel by Chester Brown and Thomas King’s short story “Borders”.

The seminar is accompanied by an Independent Study Group (ISG) for BA students who will be required to compile and present a book review.

For BA students, the class offers an independent study group which will focus on the reproductions of Puritanism in visual culture.

Inhalt:

“A diffuse […] sense of missions permeates our lives, private and public, in the United States”. Thus wrote Leo Marx in the New York Times about Sacvan Bercovitch’s The Puritan Origins of the American Self when it first came out in 1976, the bicentennial year of the founding of the US. Throughout US history, the essence of American character, its “mission” is routinely ascribed to Puritanism, with its dual heritage of dissent and struggle for reform and political activism. Puritanism becomes the magic formula for Americanness, New England, in a hyperbolic move, serves as the cradle of the nation. This seminar revisits original Puritan texts, critically examines their burgeoning into a national myth in historiography and literary criticism, and traces the representation of Puritanism in two canonized literary texts, Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter (1850) and Miller’s The Crucible (1853). We will discuss the latter through recourse to film versions and historical contexts.
