- Inhalt:
- This lecture offers a comprehensive and systematic overview of American Studies as a multidisciplinary field of scholarship with Cultural Studies at its center. We will look at Cultural Studies-approaches that address the national level (such as American exceptionalism and the myth-and-symbol school), the subnational level (such as minority discourses, gender studies, working class/Marxist interpretations of American culture, popular culture studies) as well as the transnational level of inquiry (such as transatlantic studies and inter-American scholarship including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean). To illustrate the different perspectives and theoretical paradigms we will draw on a wide range of American Studies-sources ranging from historical documents (such as maps, passenger lists, court records and sermons), literature (such as poetry, novels, memoirs), visual culture (such as painting, photography, and film), material culture (such as clothing, cars, and toys), and every-day culture (such as schoolbooks, ceremonies, national holidays, and memorial culture). Thus, we will come to understand the forces, issues and themes that drive American culture as a multi-facetted and complex set of systems and texts.
This lecture is a requirement in the Master North American Studies: Culture and Literature and in the Master The Americas/Las Américas. It can be taken as Hauptmodul B in the BA English and American Studies and Lehramt. It is also recommended for those preparing for their exam in the B.A., M.A. and Lehramt.

- This lecture gives an overview of the development of literary studies in the US from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present. The lecture outlines the changes in the understanding of American literature and the function of literary studies. It also gives an advanced introduction to literary theory. We will start with attempts to define the special character of American literature; subsequently, we will discuss theoretical approaches such as New Criticism, structuralism, poststructuralism, African American literary criticism, and postcolonial criticism. The lecture is supplemented by an Übung in which students are offered the opportunity to discuss a broad range of texts from the history of North American poetics and literary studies.

- This seminar is an introduction to English and American Literary Studies. It addresses questions such as: What is literature and what does it mean to interpret it? What is a ‘canon’ and what accounts for its formation? How do we work critically with categories of literary history? What does literary criticism entail? The class presents basic methods and key concepts of literary studies and practices the use of adequate terminology and analytic reading skills. Participants will discuss introductory academic texts and deal with particular works of poetry, prose fiction, and drama.

- In this course, we will discuss key texts in/on U.S.-American culture and civilization from 1492 to the present. We will look at the way the “new world” has been represented as a paradise, wilderness, and melting pot, as a space for individual and collective expansion (American Dream, self-made man, frontier), as a political utopia (independence, myth of the founding fathers) and as an ostensibly classless society (“We are all middle class”). We will also discuss more critical versions of America regarding the position of women, ethnic groups, and the history and legacy of hegemony and imperial strife.

- This lecture deals with aspects of modern linguistics and provides an introduction to modern linguistics, especially corpus linguistics and . cognitive aspects of the study of language.
A focus will be put on topics such as:
why we know so much more about the nature of language than we did fifty years ago
how language and cognition are related
how we imagine language to be a network of constructions
how children learn language.

- Inhalt:
- Linguistics is the scientific study of language. The Grundseminar Linguistics I, in combination with the Aufbauseminar and the Basisvorlesung (except for students of L-UF), is intended to give an overview of essential aspects of the field, of approaches and research methods. This includes questions like the following:
How can the structure of language be described? For example: How are different sounds formed and what function do sounds have in the act of communication? How are words and how are sentences structured?
How do people use language? How does the language of different people vary and why do people vary in their use of language? Why and how does language change?
Is linguistics supposed to describe or prescribe linguistic usage? Is there correct and incorrect English in native speakers? Who decides what correct English is?
How can insights gained in this way be used for the teaching and learning of English? Are some English grammars and dictionaries better than others, and what are the criteria?
The prerequisite for a successful participation in the Grundseminar English Linguistics is a sound knowledge of English. The course itself will be held in English and concludes with a written end-of-semester test.

- The goals of the Aufbauseminar English Linguistics II are
to continue the linguistic description started in the Grundseminar on different levels of structure (phonology, morphology, syntax, etc.), for example by considering the contrastive (English-German) and historical perspective,
to discuss the limitations of the models introduced in the Grundseminar (syntax according to CGEL, structural description of meaning through componential analysis, etc.) and to introduce alternative models (valency theory in syntax, description of meaning through prototypes, etc.), as well as
to introduce areas of linguistics which have not found a place in the Grundseminar (e.g. lexicography or variational linguistics).
NB In the degree programs BA and L-Gym, the Aufbauseminar and the Basisvorlesung are examined in a joint written end-of-semester test. Therefore, these courses must be attended in the same semester.

- Inhalt:
- This introductory seminar presents a survey of the main fields of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). We will refer to important principles underlying second language learning and we will discuss the different purposes, participants, practices, competences, areas and contexts of language teaching, learning and use. In addition, we will explore contemporary and more traditional approaches to foreign language teaching such as task-based language learning (TBL), content and language integrated learning (CLIL), the grammar-translation method (GT) and audio-lingualism.

- In a relatively large number of studies, researchers have identified different subject and linguistic variables significantly affecting learners’ success in acquiring a second language (L2). In this course, we will examine strategies learners typically follow when they acquire the sound system, vocabulary, and grammar of a second language. We will explore how the acquisition of a second language is affected by factors such as age, gender, motivation, language use, and input, and we will discuss different methodological approaches to studying second language acquisition.

- Inhalt:
- Success in second language (L2) acquisition is dependent on many different factors, which are often confounded. In this course, we will relate the findings of L2 studies that have examined these factors to the foreign language classroom, and we will discuss which learning environments have to be created in order to help students in an English foreign language (EFL) classroom to reach a high level of L2 proficiency. We will focus on the learning and teaching of grammar, vocabulary, phonology, pragmatics, listening and speaking skills as well as literacy skills. - Proseminar für Studierende mit bestandenem Grundseminar TEFL. Das Seminar findet virtuell in englischer Sprache statt und es wird für den Kurs ein Video bereitgestellt, im dem alle wichtigen Informationen enthalten sind. Onlinekurs mit einem Präsenztermin, an dem die Klausur abgehalten wird. Die Anrechnung von ECTS-Punkten erfolgt nach kontinuierlicher Kursteilnahme und Bestehen der Präsenzklausur (60%+ pass, <60% fail).

- Inhalt:
- Der Onlinekurs macht Lehramtsstudierende in der Fremdsprachendidaktik mit praktischen Arbeits- und Anwendungsfeldern digitaler Medien im Unterricht vertraut. Vor dem Hintergrund theoriebasierter Modellüberblicke, beispielsweise zur Entwicklung des Medieneinsatzes oder der didaktisch-methodischen Entscheidungsbereiche im Umgang mit Medien im modernen Fremdsprachenunterricht, werden praktische und zeitgemäße Einsatzmöglichkeiten digitaler Medien aufgezeigt, analysiert und kreativ in eigenen Unterrichtsplanungen mit Bezug zu TBLL, ICC und CLIL umgesetzt.

- There is no such thing as an "average learner". Even a seemingly homogeneous class is characterized by individual features of the learners and their differences in proficiency level, motivation, learning style, social background, first language and many others. Good teaching should try to perceive and consciously take into account these different learning conditions.
In this seminar we will discuss, among other things,
which prerequisites of the learners we need to be aware of
which methods are available to identify the status quo in order to enable a concrete, systematic and targeted adaptation of the learning content to the needs of the learners
which learning arrangements can be used to enable individual progress for as many learners as possible.
