- Inhalt
- ECTS-Informationen:
- Title:
- Topology and frustration in quantum systems
- Contents
- This lecture treats several interesting and recent developments
in our physical understanding of quantum matter which all deal
with the fundamental question what kind of quantum phases (vacua)
are realized by nature and which kind of excitations (particles)
are formed in such quantum worlds. To this end two particular
fascinating and important aspects are the influence of topology and
the consequences of so-called frustration. The lecture is divided into
several parts which all highlight especially these two points.
The first part introduces in the physical aspects of graphene.
The middle part covers topological effects of band structures which is
relevant for Chern and topological insulators
as well as topological superconductors, where the system is characterized by
topological invariants. The remaining part of the lecture
deals with strongly correlated quantum systems. The third part
introduces the concept of topological quantum order. Such topologically
ordered systems show long-range entanglement in the ground state and
possess anyons as elementary excitations. Anyons have fractional
statistics different from bosons and fermions which build the basis
for the concept of topological quantum computing. The fourth part of
this lecture introduces into several aspects of the field of frustrated
systems.
