Since the lecture will be accompanied by programming exercises in Python, prior knowledge of this programming language is recommended. For students without prior experience, a very brief introduction to Python will be provided in the first two exercise sessions.
Inhalt:
Networks are fundamental data structures for modeling and analyzing complex biological, technological, or social systems. This course provides an introduction to the science of complex networks and their applications. The following topics will be covered:
Very brief introduction to graph theory, the mathematical underpinning of network science,
node centrality measures,
models of random networks,
network motifs,
degree correlations,
community detection,
network distance models,
evolving networks,
temporal networks.
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
Students will
get familiar with the basics of graph theory,
learn how to use networks to model complex relationships,
get familiar with the most important techniques for analyzing complex networks,
acquire hands-on experience in analyzing complex networks with the widely used Python library NetworkX.
