- 'Metaphysical Poetry' is a fascinating example of literature in the 17th century. Poets like John Donne, Andrew Marvell, Henry Vaughan and George Herbert are famous for their innovative imagery based on 'conceits', paradoxes and oxymorons. Their poetry mirrors the intense political, religious, cultural and philosophical tensions of the era. In this seminar we will analyse Metaphysical Poetry in the context of a world picture characterized by a strange mélange of 17th-century science with the long lore of arcane learning.
