- Contents
- This seminar is designed to give you an introduction into literary studies, including terminology,
key concepts, and basic research skills. We will read introductory texts and work with literary
examples, covering the three genres, poetry, prose, and drama. Questions such as 'what is
literature?', 'what is a canon and what accounts for its formation?' will be addressed and discussed.
While the majority of literary texts for this class are taken from North American literature, this does
neither require nor necessarily lead to a specialization in North American literary studies.
- Recommended literature
- Most course readings will be available on StudOn. They include Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" and Ernest Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". In addition, please acquire Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie.
