Contents
In this course, we will investigate the sinology of the French scholar Marcel Granet (1884-1940), who published six major sinological texts between 1919 and 1934. His iconic works include the 1934 classic "La pensée chinoise" ("Chinese Thought"). The text is regularly cited to this day in a wide variety of sinological arguments, and it will be available in English draft translation for our course. Moreover, we will study some of the core texts from early China that were the foundation for Granet’s innovative arguments. These include excerpts from the "Classic of Poetry" and the "Book of Ritual". Our study of these Chinese texts will provide a very strong foundation in classical Chinese that will be useful for further study in both classical and modern topics.
